Michael Scott Edwards was born Dec. 25, 1955, at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, a son of Charles Leo and June Marie (Cummings) Edwards, and died Wednesday (March 8, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He graduated from Council Rock High School in Newtown, Pa., in 1974. Mike attended Chesapeake College, obtaining his AA in 1984 and completed one year toward his BA degree at the University of Maryland. He graduated from the Eastern Shore Criminal Justice Academy in 1984 and later received his certification from the Delaware State Police as a Doppler radar operator. He also attended the Security Specialist Air Force Military Training Center in Lackland AFB.

Mike enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1975 and was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. He served with the 44th Security Missile Wing, 44th Missile Security Squadron, and was a member of Flight 67-2. He also worked in the 68th area guarding missiles. Following Mike's discharge in 1979, he moved to New Jersey.

On May 26, 1979, he was united in marriage to Janet Louise Daiker at the Church of the Brethren in Denton, Md., and this union was blessed with two sons. He and his family moved to Greene in 1990, and he later became employed at the United States Postal Service in Mason City where he worked until his death.

Mike's spiritual journey began when he gave his life to the Lord in July 1976 and received the Holy Spirit on Oct. 23, 1988. Mike was a very active member of the Church of the Brethren and it's yoke parish, United Methodist Church. He taught adult Sunday school and was a member of the Pastor Parish Relation Committee. He filled in at the pulpit when asked.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing and hunting. His greatest hobby was model building, which he started doing at a very young age. Mike loved flying in a Cessna 150, having soloed and done cross-country flights.

Living family members include his loving wife of 26 years, Janet, of Greene; two sons, Michael Alan (friend Stephanie) and Christopher Mark Edwards, both of Greene; mother, June Edwards, of Church Hill, Tenn.; two brothers, Charles F. Edwards of Manitou Springs, Colo., and Mark (Sandra) Edwards of Peoria Heights, Ill.; mother- and father-in-law, Don and Mary Daiker of Greene; two sisters-in-law, Freda (Greg) Collins, of Delaware and Dorothy Daiker of Texas, and one brother-in-law, Blair Daiker of Texas; and two nieces and one nephew.

We are on Eddie's mail route in Mason City. It is very sad for us to see that he has passed away and our deepest condolances go out to his family. He often spoke of his two sons and wife when he would stop for some small talk. He was a really nice guy, was very proud of his family, had a great sense of humor, and was dedicated to his duties as our mail carrier. We will miss him and we are praying for everyone who knew him.

I am sorry for your loss. It's hard when someone you love so much and they are taken from you. I know that he was saved and is in Heaven but I know that it doesn't make it that much easier. May God be with you in this time of loss and His angels comfort you always. Much Love in Christ and God Bless.

My wife Toni and I were sorry to hear about Eddie's death. He was a good friend of my family. My father, Kirk Sr., served with Eddie in the Air Force and I know they have been good friends for a long time. I also had the pleasure of knowing him from when I was a small child. We are sending you our condolences, thoughts, and prayers during this difficult time. He will be missed by my entire family. May the memory of the good times in life you shared together help comfort you in your time of grief.

Mike was one of my dearest friends and part of my Church Family before he and his family moved to Greene.

I will always remember the pleasure of playing golf together, sharing Military histoy with each other, the Canasta games with Jan, the sharing of the saving grace of Christ that we both have.

You will be missed, but not forgotten, God Bless.

I travel to Mason City every day for my work. I happened to be one of many in vehicles as we passed by the accident site. I will keep you in my prayers as you mourn Eddie's death. As a fellow Veteran I salute Eddie as he now rests in peace. God be with you.

We are so sorry for your loss. My husband, Perry was the first vehicle at the accident scene and was heartbroken that Eddie's life was already gone. You will remain in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Nancy and I work at Mechanical Air Systems and were on the mail route. We feel as though we've lost a friend. Even though we didn't know him well enough to know his name, he brought in bread from the bakery in Greene and peanut butter fudge at Christmas time. We looked forward to his daily visits and his cheery attitude, and are very very sorry for his family. He was a really nice guy.

I can only say that I am truly sorry for your loss. I was Mike's supervisor at the post office until 1998 and considered him a man of character and honesty. It was a privilege that I got to know him. Be strong. My thoughts are with you.
