MONTE HARDIN GOODE III

MONTE GOODE Obituary

BOERNE - Monte Hardin Goode III passed away last Saturday in San Angelo, Texas. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Presbyterian Church in Sanderson, Texas. A graveside service will follow. Born on Mar. 7, 1929, Monte was the son of Nelberta and M.H. Goode, ranchers and longtime residents of Terrell County, where Monte, known for his exceptional storytelling ability, lived for much of his life. Most people in the area were familiar with Monte's unique analogies and salty descriptive terms. Though he loved to have a good time, Monte usually chose the toughest paths in life. During the Korean War, he enlisted as one of the country's first Army rangers and fought as a member of the 10th Airborne Ranger Company, an elite military group recognized for its rigorous training and exemplary soldiers. Later, Monte became an ironworker (Local #66) and again chose the most difficult and dangerous work in the trade. He hung steel on some of the tallest buildings in the world and eventually founded his own steel erection business in San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cecilia Stirman; and his beloved wife, Suan Goode. Monte is survived by 22 grandchildren; and 10 children, Charles "Chip" Goode of San Antonio, Lesa Shaw of Austin, Lori Banner of Iraan, Texas, Gaylyn Weber of Herndon, Virginia, Valerie Willis of Waco, Sheri Lough of Clovis, N.M., Monta Jean Cochran of Melrose, N.M., Jan Watts of Amarillo, Woody Rebrovich of Penrose, N.C., and Krissy Goode of New York City. Monte was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. Throughout his life, he proved himself to be tough and outstanding as well as generous to those who knew him. He will always be remembered as - in the words of a fellow Ranger - "a man's man, a leader's leader, a Ranger's Ranger." In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Schreiner University (in memory of Monte H. Goode III), Campus Mail Box (CMB) 5904, 2100 Memorial Blvd. Kerrville, TX 78028.
