Dear Parkhurst family,
I want you to know that we were the first one's at the scene of the accident in Copper Harbor - Your son did not suffer. My husband, daugher, son in law, and friend arrived just a moment after the accident. We are so sorry for your huge loss - and we will keep your family in our prayers. May our God of strength and comfort wrap his arms around all of you.

I just put 2 and 2 together and started asking around online and found out it was him. I didn't get to meet Jake but I wanted to. He's been my chat buddy on msn for the past few months. He was respectful,considerate, and especially nice to talk to, to spend time with. I will miss him too. To his folks, I wish that this could have picked a different time to happen.

We unfortunately didn't get to know Jacob like many of the others, but do know your other two children and can't even fathom what you are going through at this difficult time. For Jake's parents ...
We were in the ER the night the Copper Harbor accident victims were brought in. We were there with our own sick teenager. While Aspirus Keweenaw has a small ER, they were handling the situation beautifully - on full alert, moving as a synchronized team. Every person was being treated compassionately.
At one point, hours later, I stepped into the hallway, looking for our nurse. The place was empty. Everyone, even the chaplain, had left. The monitors were off, the equipment gone, the lights dim. A young man was lying on a bed across from me. From photos, I now know this young man was Jake. And there was our nurse, sitting next to the bed. Just sitting there, a calm, loving presence, staying with him.
I don't know you, nor did I know Jake, but I pass this on to you because, if it were my child, I'd hope his passing was marked and respected. As someone who just happened to be in the ER, I can honestly tell you that Jake was never just a body -- he was a beloved, whose passing was mourned.

We lost our daughter near the same age as Jacob and we do know what you are going through. There are no words at this time that can dull your pain, but
