Matthew Golik Obituary

WOLF POINT - Wolf Point Mayor Matthew Albert Golik, Jr., 59, died in an accidental drowning Saturday at Fort Peck Reservoir.
Visitation is noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel. His funeral is 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
Matt is survived by his wife, Kay; two sons, Aaron (Tracy) and their son Matthew Golik, all of Lewistown, and Jacob (Kristi) Golik of Great Falls, Mont.; siblings Jim Golik of Billings, Tom Golik of Malta, Maureen Lundman of Glendive, Mont., Ann Marie Perry of Devils Lake, N.D., Marilyn Larson of Hudson, Wis., and Ralph Golik of Carson City, Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew Albert Golik Sr. and Cleo May Golik.
Matthew was born Nov. 4, 1948, to Matthew Sr. and Cleo May (Ryan) Golik, in Conrad, Mont. He grew up in Malta, Mont., and graduated from Malta High School in 1966. He then attended Bismarck Junior College in North Dakota, where he met and fell in love with his future wife, Kay Jordahl. They married on Dec. 27, 1969, in Minot, N.D., and were blessed with two children, Aaron and Jacob. Matt graduated from Minot State College with a bachelor's of arts degree in chemistry.
After completing his education, Matt returned to Minot and began working for Montana Dakota Utilities in 1971, working his way up to his most-recent position of district manager. Matt and Kay lived in Billings, Mont., for eight years prior to moving to Wolf Point in 1981.
Even with his work and family, Matt was kept very busy in his immediate community and beyond. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge and has been the mayor of Wolf Point since 1999.
Matt loved anything involving the outdoors: hunting, fishing and camping. He especially enjoyed any time spent with his grandson, Matthew, and his boys, Aaron and Jacob.
Memorials may be made to the Wolf Point Volunteer Fire De-partment; Wolf Point Police Department; Wolf Point 100 Club; or Valley County Search and Rescue.

Dear Kay,Aaron, and Jake,
I'm soo sorry to hear of Matt's passing. I tried to make it back to the funeral but was stuck in Canada at the time.
Lately and as many years as I have been gone from Wolf Point, for some reason every time I did end up there, somehow I always ran into Matt. I don't know how but surely it always happened. He always had a smile on his face and always asked how I was doing. He was truly a great guy. I'll miss his friendship!

Kay, Aaron and Jacob, I was truly saddened when I heard about Matt. He was someone I always looked forward to running into whenever I was back home.
Back when Jacob and I were kids, I remember the morning he made us his "world famous French toast" and the afternoon he took us out to Target Hill to shoot his .357.
Matt was a good man and will be missed by all who knew him.

Our hearts are sad for all of you today. Remember when you were the adopted family of Sylvan Lane coming down from the Glenhaven Hill to join our close knit neighborhood? Matt used to sing to the boys in their makeshift camp site in the yard - "Aaron row your boat ashore" and Michael would come home insisting that I let Matt know he was singing it wrong. So many wonderful memories to hold on to.

I knew Matt when he was growing up in Malta as the Golik family lived across the street from us by the court house. I remember back in those days what an outstanding wrestler Matt was. In these later years Matt was always so kind to ask me how my parents were doing whenever I would see him. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

We were shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Matt's untimely death. He was devoted to his family, to his friends, and to his faith. His family was a constant source of pride to him. When little children would come up to talk with him, he got down on their level and made them feel as if they were the most important people in the world. He was a tremendous influence in this community and his compassion was without bounds. His jokes and sly winks will be missed. With affection and deep sympathy, we pray that God comfort you.

Goliks, one and all,
I have memories of "Butch" that go back many years. I was always at the Golik house in Malta with Maureen. Butch, my brother Jack and Murph were always into some kind of mischief. I will remember the smiles and fun that were evident when Butch was around. God bless you all in the physical loss of a wonderful Man.

Kay, Aaron and Jake. I remember the first time I met Matt was at branding. He and I were riding, there was a noise and when I turned around, he was on the ground, he looked up and with his hearty laugh said "I was checking my stirrup." This humor and quick wit remain in the hearts and memories of the many people whose lives he has touched. In this difficult time take solace in the fact that Matt left an "impression" and made a difference.

Kay, Aaron, & Jacob, no amount of words can bring the comfort that only God can bring. Rest assured, Matt was a man that truly left his mark on the world. You'll always want to remember the last words you said to him, but know that at a time like this, it's the memories that will bring the most comfort and allow us to cherish the moments we still have with those we know and love. Our prayers are earnestly with you all. May God Bless you.

To my dear brother in law and wonderful uncle to my girls. We are sure you are saving us a place in heaven and have already struck up a great game of pinnocle with Mom and Dad Golik. We sent you some balloons on Wednesday and I am sure you loved Hannah's note: "Uncle Matt, you were one of the best men I ever knew and I will miss you. Heaven is a better place now. I love you."
To my dear sister in law and wonderful nephews. Our prayers are with you. Matt truly was as Hannah said, one of the greatest men in this world. We will miss him so much! Love and God's blessings.
