Elizabeth Hogan Obituary

Hogan, Elizabeth A.

Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Hogan, 82, of Green Bay, shared her final good bye surrounded by her adoring family in the early morning hours of March 14, 2015 at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee. After 60 days of fighting the fight of her life with dignity and grace and sweetness and unbelievable strength of spirit, her body succumbed to complications from advanced kidney disease.

Betty was born on July 14, 1932 in Green Bay, WI to Howard and Elizabeth (Kopf) Maloney. She graduated from West High School in 1950. Betty met the love of her life, Bob, on the baseball fields of Green Bay where she watched him pitch many games. They were married on April 19, 1952 at St. Patrick's Church in Green Bay where they also raised their own baseball team of 10 children. Betty and Bob were blessed to have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2002 surrounded by their large family and dear friends.

Betty's generosity was legendary - she would literally give you the shirt off her back. In the midst of raising a family of 10 children, there was always room in her huge heart and modest home for one more child or friend to feed and sleep over, one more stray dog or cat to take in and multiple pots of African violets or orchids to tend to. Her love of flowers was a passion that spilled over on to her little apartment deck each spring with her beautiful hanging plants.

Betty was an avid Packer and Brewer fan who dressed for game day in her stylish team jerseys and hats. She was always the most vocal cheerer at the party. During Packer games she could often be heard down the block screaming "GET THE DEVIL!!!" as the opposing team was running for a touchdown.

Betty possessed that Irish gift of gab in any social setting. She knew how to work a crowd and her magnetic personality instantly drew you in to be her friend. She made many friends in many places, the last stop being St. Luke's in Milwaukee where she gave it her all. In spite of being critically ill and having her voice silenced she still managed to turn on her "Betty " charm and touch the lives of her many caregivers through note writing and gestures.

Betty's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the entire staff of St. Luke's CardioVascular ICU and Heart Failure Unit for their excellent care and kindness that extended to Betty's visiting family as well. A special thanks to two nurses in particular: Rosalee, whose skilled and tender gentle care soothed Betty's broken body in time of need and Michelle, whose smile and upbeat presence brought rays of sunshine to Betty's hospital room of too many days.

Betty was known by her grandchildren as the "cool grandma" whom they cherished greatly. "Gammy Betty" was the grandma who rocked and accessorized with bling. She was so interested and involved in all of their lives and couldn't get enough of all 22 of them. She lived to hear that knock on her door when they would come to visit.

Betty loved to plan a party for any occasion - "the more the merrier" was her motto because she always had "enough food to feed Coxey's Army". She knew parties would bring her children and grandchildren together under one roof and that was her greatest pleasure in life. She had a passion for food and was always sharing her latest and "most delicious" recipe with whomever she could reach by phone.

Betty was a CNN news junkie and couldn't wait to phone family and friends each day to deliver the breaking news and, of course, the daily chit chat that would follow. She wanted so much to stay connected to her large family and circle of friends and thus, her telephone became her social lifeline as her mobility decreased.

But Betty's most cherished role was that as a mother and she set the gold standard. Her unflinching care and concern and involvement in all of her ten children's lives continued into their adulthood. Her heart swelled with happiness for them in their good times and broke for them in their difficult times. She just couldn't stop being a mom. And on top of that, Betty was a fun mom that her children considered their friend and with whom they truly enjoyed spending time.

Betty is survived by her six daughters-Debbie (Carl) Gustafson, Maureen (Tim Norman)Hogan, Kathleen (John) Bodart, Colleen (John Mettner) Hogan, Molly (special friend, Dennis) Watzka, Shannon (Mike) Goeben; two sons-Timothy (Karen) Hogan and Thomas (Ruth) Hogan; one daughter-in-law, Jacque Hogan; 22 grandchildren-Jaimie; Shaylen; Zach and Jess; Jessica, Jenna, Anna and Kara; Kristen, Lindsay and Katie; Abbey and Michael; Brennan, Breanna, Chelsey and Jordan; McKenzie, Kylie and Dylan; Chaz and Conner; seven great grandchildren-Desirae; Ellie Shay, Olivia and Evan; Elias and Micah; and Nevaeh; sister, Mary Jane Berken; brother, Gerald (Hope) Maloney; sister-in-law, Carol Maloney.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her two sons, Patrick and Michael; her parents, Howard and Elizabeth Maloney; brother, Patrick Maloney; brother-in-law, Roy Berken.

She was only in my life for a few months, but she changed my life forever. I remember staying at her house and watching Barnyard, and going on car rides, shopping, and just being together. We would eat snacks and laugh. She was like my grandma, and I'll never forget her. Hope she rests in peace and lived life to the fullest. ~ Gabriella Kurczek with Deborah, Lily, and Ike Kurczek

Kathy, and all of the Hogan Family, I was so saddened to come across your mother's obituary. The tears just keep flowing. My memories of Betty are of a warm, loving person who made me feel so comfortable and welcome in her home. For a period your house was like a second home to me... and though I'm sure I was like the guest who wouldn't leave at times - Betty and Bob never made me feel that way. Betty holds a huge place in my heart, as does your whole family. Her smile and laugh is as clear to me now as it was thirty some years ago. I am so sorry for your loss - she was a very special lady... the best.

I am so sorry to hear of Betty's death. We were good friends in grade school and even though we went to different high schools we remained friends. I had 8 babies - she beat me of course. Every morning we used to talk on the phone to see who was morning sick. Most of the time we both were. Also we used to take our babies for walks together. When we moved to Chippewa Falls we didn't see much of each other but were still good friends. She was so very sweet and a great friend. Even though I live away I will still miss my good friend Betty.

I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I have so many memories of her while I was growing up. Your mom's bridal shower was a huge deal for me when I was just a youngster. It was my first adult party! Thank you also to Debbie & Maureen for babysitting all of my little Wittigs.
There so many wonderful memories creeping up with growing up with my parent's best friends, Paul & Hortense Hogan and their children and grandchildren. Betty was such a "honey" and the Lord will be happy to welcome her into his arms.

I met her when I was a child. She ministered to me as though I was her own. A beautiful, classy lady, full of love, charm and joy. So blessed to have known her. You are all in my thoughts and prayers as you adjust to life here on earth without her. She was blessed and a blessing.

Dear Hogan Family,
Although I have not seen your family in over 45 years I remember Mrs. Hogan and your family with very fond memories. We met your family because my dog always ran away from home to your house when I lived on Mason Street. Mrs. Hogan therefore named him, and took him in as her own and named him Traveler. From that day on, Mrs. Hogan made me feel so special as if I was one of her many children running in and out of your home. You all remain one of my fondest memories of living in Green Bay. May your happy memories heal your broken hearts. Formerly Mary Vanden Busch

Oh what a beautiful lady Betty was, I'm going to miss her dearly. Such a fun loving joy to be around. She raised such awesome children, with personalities just like hers! As much as we are all going to miss her, she will have no more pain, no more tough time getting around, no more suffering. Please know that all of you have my sympathy, I enjoyed doing Betty's hair for the last several years, from the moment she stepped foot in my salon, I felt as though I knew her forever...she was just that kind of lady!

Dear Hogan family:
So sorry to hear that your dear mother passed away. She was a kind and thoughtful woman, a good neighbor and friend, and very strong indeed. She triumphed over many health issues through the years...but that was Betts, as my mother Bea liked to call her.
Our hearts go out to you as you bid your mother good-bye. RIP (Rest in Peace) can also mean Rejoice in Paradise, for a good Irish Catholic like your mom.
With sympathy, Susan (Anderson) Krueger

Dear Maureen, Tim, Zach, Jess and Hogan family,
I only had the privelage of spending a couple of visits w Betty. What an honor it truly was to be with her. Betty was a beacon of positive, fun, real, and loving energy. I loved talking about the latest gossip magazines, how she met her husband and what an amazing loving man he was, raising her oodles of children, home shopping purchases, and just hearing all of her wise words she had to share. It was evident she adored her family, and she left a last impression on anyone she met. I was fortunate to feel her sparkle, and I will never forget her. Maureen your mom will live on through you, and she is with you always. God Bless

Wow...what more could any one of us "mere
humans" want to leave behind, but a legacy as amazing, fulfilling, fun, and loving as Betty? As a woman who has never met Betty in this life...I can't wait to look her up in the next Amen Sister
