Joel JOHNSTON Obituary

News Death Notice

JOHNSTON, Dr. Joel David passed away May 27, 2012 at home, unexpectedly from natural causes. He was born February 3, 1976 in Madison, Wisconsin to David and Kay Johnston and raised in Oregon, Wisconsin graduating from high school in 1994. Joel's early interests involved dinosaurs, then later food prep, science and sports (basketball, football, baseball, swimming and bowling). He developed a photographic memory, a keen sense of humor, a love of travel, and a witty way with words, reflected in his amazing speaking abilities. He graduated in 2000 as a Doctor of Chiropractic from Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, Minnesota as one of the youngest to graduate in this field. He was also president of the NWHSU Motion Palpation Club while there. One of his many highlights was as an assistant clinician for the Iron Man Triathalon in Lake Placid, NY in 1999. He moved to Oxford, Ohio to begin his chiropractic career helping others at Oxford Chiropractic Center. During this time he also consulted at Mt. Lookout Chiropractic and Sports Injury Clinic in Cincinnati where he later worked. Dr. Johnston's career led him to travel to conferences abroad (Denmark, Holland, Germany and Ireland) as well as in the United States (especially Portland, Oregon which he fell in love with) where he lectured as an advisor/faculty for the Motion Palpation Institute, at times as the keynote speaker. His specialties included biomechanics, human gait and pelvis, spine, and the founding of the Chiropractic Masters Series. Among his many professional associations, he was a post graduate faculty at accredited National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, IL and Northwestern Health Sciences University of Bloomington, MN. He was a guest lecturer and adjunct professor at Miami of Ohio University. Dr. Johnston also traveled to many conferences and symposiums, meeting some of the most prominent figures in his field in quest of cutting-edge knowledge to better serve his patients. Joel has worked at Indian Creek Family Health Center later expanding its services with the opening of Indian Creek Innovative Medicine in College Corner using a team medical approach with Dr. Nathan Morris for the past 3 years. They practiced a comprehensive integrated approach on health care with a focus on nutrition and a non-drug pain management. Dr. Joel Johnston is survived by his parents, Dave and Kay Johnston of Stone Lake, Wisconsin; a brother, Kelley (Leslie Williams) in Tampa, Florida; a sister Nikki (Johnston) Knox in St. Paul, Minnesota, his beloved dog, Charley; his girlfriend, Joleen Young of Oxford; and many close friends and caring relatives as well as the families of Dr. Nathan Morris and Dr. Eric Eiselt who were his Ohio family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Harry and Ila Williams and Quinton and Gwetholyn Johnston. A memorial gathering, with a service beginning at 9:30am, will be held at Cobblestone Community Church, 4191 Kehr Road in Oxford, Ohio on Saturday, June 9 ending at 12:00pm. A memorial service will be held in Hayward, Wisconsin at a later date. The Ogle & Paul R Young Funeral Homes are handling the arrangements. In Dr. Joel Johnston's brief life his stellar accomplishments are a beacon to others who work in chiropractic endeavors. "There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, the light remains." (anonymous) Joel's light will shine in our hearts as long as we have the ability to remember.

My earliest memory was arguing with Joel at the end of his driveway one day. He said he was four (years old) and I argued that I was the one who was four. Turns out he was right. Sorry about that, Joel. Joel was a good, loving, sincere, and giving friend. It's easy to say these words, but he demonstrated them by his actions consistently throughout his life. I regret not being closer in touch these last few years. We're reminded how precious life is when it's taken away. Thank God that life is also eternal. I hope we meet again, my friend. To Kay, Dave, Kelley, and Nikki I hope we can reconnect online or by phone. God bless.

Dear Mr and Mrs Johnston, Kelley and Nikki -
I am simply without words and am so very sorry for your loss. I will always have such great memories of Joel and my thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you all.

I have and will continue to miss Joel greatly, not only on the level of his skills and chiropractic/overall health abilities and endless knowledge, but also as a friend. I have known Joel and gone to him while he was in the Oxford area for nearly 12 years. You could always find a growth in yourself, as well as contribute to his own personal growth in each meeting. Loved you like a brother Joel......you will never be forgotten.

I am shocked to hear that Dr. Johnston was taking away from us so early. I met Dr. Johnston a few yrs ago and he was a caring person. During my visits to him we talked about Wisconsin and life in general. He will be truly missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

June 6, 2012

I only spoke with Dr. Johnston's a few times after introducing myself following an appointment with his coworker Dr. Morris. I work in healthcare too, so I had a few questions about his work. He was so friendly and engaging and I could tell he had a passion to learn and help his patients. I'm sorry to hear of his death, and my sympathy goes out to his family, girlfriend, friends, and collegues. I'm sure he will be so greatly missed. Joyce Ravary

I'm shocked to hear the news of Dr. Johnston's passing. I recently moved to this area and was thrilled to find a chiropractor who was not only compassionate about his work but so caring and friendly toward his patients as well. I'm sure all who knew him will greatly miss him as I will. My prayers of comfort are extended to Joel's family and friends.

Sadly, I became acquainted with Joel quite late in his short life--only a few months ago. Every visit with him involved a stimulating and enjoyable conversation. His depth of knowledge in his field was prodigious. I miss him very much.

I did not know this young man, but from the obit he sounds like a lovely human being. So sad that he passed away far too young. Bless his family/friends/doggie, etc.
