Arthur K. Stedman

1929 - 2021

Arthur Keeney Stedman died on his 92nd birthday, December 27, 2021. He was born in Hartford, CT on December 27, 1929 to Dorothea (Keeney) and Arthur Brewer Stedman. A West Hartford native, he attended local elementary schools and The Gunnery School (now The Frederick Gunn School), graduating from Brown University. Taking a hiatus from Brown, he served in the US Air Force. He was stationed in Colorado Springs, CO, where he was a valued member of the golf team. Following graduation from Brown , Arthur pursued an acting career in New York City where he studied with Lee Strasberg. From New York, Arthur returned to the Hartford, CT area where he joined his father in his family's business, Stedman & Redfield. Eventually, Art established a landscaping business in the West Hartford area. What really defined AK, though, was not his career but his outsized personality and love of family and friends. He was a championship golfer at the Hartford Golf Club, a teller of (sometimes tall) tales, an athlete, an avid reader, and most especially a wonderful father. He appeared in local theater productions, including at the Canton Show Shop and the Hartford Stage Company. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and his 1938 Ford Woodie wagon . Developing a love of Truro, MA following many Augusts spent there, Arthur and his wife Betty lived in Wellfleet, MA. There he fished the waters in Cape Cod Bay and off Ballston Beach, walked his dogs Phoebe and Nanu, and drove down to the harbor to check on the fishing fleet. Arthur is survived by his wife, Betty Allison of Old Saybrook, CT; his daughter, Amanda Stedman Bourque (Bill), of Andover, VT; a sister, Dorothea Stieff of Townson, MD; granddaughters Julia, Madeline and Kathleen Bourque and grandson Jacob Stedman, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Anthony Owen Stedman. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
