Marguerite MICELI Obituary

MICELI, Marguerite Mary

Once upon a time there lived a special, young, beautiful Italian girl named Margarita. She lived in Cromwell with her beloved mother, Sylvia Grace (Ravalese) Miceli, her two protective big sisters, Francesca and Carmelina Miceli, and her little Yorkie, Toby Baby. She had light brown hair, bright blue eyes and an infectious smile that could light up a room. She loved to read and to write, to listen and laugh, and she loved to learn. She was especially proud of her ability to become fluent in sign language and to achieve the Girl Scout Gold Award. Above all, she loved her family. Margarita grew up working with her mom, sisters and extended family (including her favorite Uncle Harry A. Ravalese, her Aunt and Godmother Marguerite Daigle, and her cousins) at the family restaurant in town named for her late father, Francesco Miceli, called Franco's Pizzeria. There she proudly served not only the best Italian food around, but also joy, humor and happiness to customers and colleagues alike, whom she considered her extended "Franco's Family." Margarita dreamed of becoming a pharmacist and she chased that dream with a passion. During her years at Mercy High School she got a job working as a pharmacy technician at the local Stop & Shop Pharmacy, where she has spread her compassion and caring for five plus years. She went to the University of Connecticut, where she was elected to the Student Government and planned many social events and outings for her classmates. She graduated from UCONN this past spring, with a Bachelors of Science in Allied Health and a minor in Biology. Soon thereafter, at the age of 23, Margarita was accepted to the St. Joseph's University, School of Pharmacy to begin the pursuit of her dream. It was the happiest time of her life. Unbeknownst to many, Margarita was mysteriously diagnosed with lupus at the age of 18. Margarita quietly and bravely struggled with underlying symptoms not fully understood for five years. On Monday, September 10, 2012, Margarita was reunited with her father Francesco, following complications associated with her condition. Although her battle is over, her memory will continue in the hearts of those whose lives she has touched. Margarita's life will forever be celebrated by her loving mother Sylvia; her two sisters Francesca and Carmelina; her grandmother Carmelina B. Ravalese; her Uncles Harry and Michael Ravalese; her Aunt Marguerite M. Daigle; her Uncle Deacon Ronald Daigle; and her four cousins, Paul and wife Eileen, Ronald, Joseph and Elizabeth Daigle. She also leaves behind her great-uncle Guiseppe Gandolfo; her Uncle Diego Miceli and Aunt Teresa (Depa) Miceli; her cousins Frances, Elizabeth, Maria and Julie; her Godfather Vincenzo Miceli and Aunt Valerie (Foligno) Miceli; her cousins Joseph, Vincenzo and Michael; and her Uncle Claudio Miceli and Aunt Sandra Scavetta, and cousins Danielle and Joseph.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the D'Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, September 17, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the St. John Church, 5 St. John's Square, Cromwell. Everyone is asked to go directly to church Monday morning. Entombment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Hartford. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph's University, School of Pharmacy, for a scholarship fund that is being established in her memory.

Marguerite grew up right by my side. I will always cherish the Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons where she would follow me around Franco's from table to table just to keep our conversation going. I remember her fawning over Carmelina just before we left for the CMS 8th grade grad dance and how she always sought Lina's approval. I remember her telling me how much she admired Francesca's poise and drive and how she wanted to be just like Fran when she grew up. And I remember how she would never say or do anything before she'd considered the impact it would have on Sylvia.

I never fully got to tell her how prideful it made me that she went to UConn and to now learn she also joined the Student Government a few years after I did gives me incredible joy. I enjoyed getting calls from my Mom that she had seen Marguerite at Stop & Shop, and I loved that it kept me updated on Sylvia, Francesca & Carmelina... in addition to Marguerite herself.

God doesn't make many like Marguerite, and she has left an impact that will never leave any of us that ever met her. You were and are truly loved, Marguerite.

Marguerite became an angel to us the first time we set foot on the campus of University of St. Joseph school of pharmacy. She brought light to our souls with smiles. It was not long but I feel proud to have met an awesome person. To the Miceli family, may the good Lord grant you excess strength. Always remember she is still with you all.

Marguerite brought many smiles to our home and family as our daughter, Jen, attended school with her at St. John's. She blessed Jen with many gifts, mainly with unconditional love and friendship up to this day. Rest peacefully Marguerite. Dear Sylvia, Francesca, Carmelina, and family, I am so sorry to hear about Marguerite's passing. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers to you all as you mourn the passing of a truly wonderful young woman. As Marguerite's advisor for her undergraduate degree at UConn, I had the pleasure of getting to know her over the past few years and of celebrating her graduation in May. May you find peace in knowing that she achieved her dream. With deepest sympathies...

She was the most determined person I've ever met. She could have taken it easy with her schoolwork or stopped working while battling with her illness, but she wouldn't let herself. She was determined to not let her illness run her life, and she persevered long after most others would have given up. Getting into pharmacy school was one of her proudest moments, and I'm very happy she was able to receive her white coat. She earned it. She deserved better than the unfortunate hand she was dealt, but she bravely made the best of it.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Miceli/Ravalese family during this time. Marguerite was a beautiful, vibrant and headstrong young lady who lived life to the fullest. One of her best qualities was the ability to forgive and I'am a better person because of that. I just recently got to know marguerite. I work at the same store she did. I used to talk to her when she was on her 15 min. break. She shared with me things about her medical condition, but never complained, or felt sorry for herself. She always had a smile on her face, and had nothing but positive things to say. I always wondered with all her medical problems, how she could be so happy and positive. She is the nicest person I have ever met. She truly is an angel.
