Michael Nye-Madden Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Thomas Nye-Madden on February 14, 2023, at the age of 20. Michael succumbed to addiction after a long and difficult battle. He was born on 4/22/02 in Lansing, MI, with multiple substances in his system. With love and support he recovered. He was adopted and adored by his devoted parents, Cindy Nye (Farmington, CT) and Kathy Madden (Cape Coral, FL). For years he was our miracle baby, seemingly defying all the odds. But when Michael discovered marijuana at the age of 13, addiction quickly took over.

Michael loved to cook, especially experimenting with new tastes and flavors. He played soccer, basketball and lacrosse in high school, and also liked to skateboard and work out. He loved music, and always had a flair for style. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson, and friend. He adored his niece, Phaydra Nugent, and she equally adored her Uncle Mike.

Michael is predeceased by grandparents Suzanne Madden, Richard Nye, Marilyn Nye, and Charles Burdick. He is survived by siblings Lanse Nye-Madden, Eddie Elinburg, Tonya Nugent (husband Don) and Ell Medina; Stephanie Sheerin; niece Phaydra Nugent; grandfather Thomas Madden; aunts Lisa Madden and Mary Boucher, his Aunt Kristine and Uncle Kevin Powers; and Uncles Paul Nye and Dominic Carew. Michael also leaves behind cousins KJ and Colin Powers, and Nick Boucher; Aunts Lisa Stevens and Vickie Bateman and their family, and godmothers Mary Lannoye and Kathy Kacynski.

Michael was loved by many, touching people's hearts wherever he went. His ready smile and kind eyes put everyone at ease. Even in the midst of his own struggles, he was a light and inspiration for others who were trying to get clean. We appreciate the many treatment providers, and peers in rehab, AA and NA, who cared for and supported Michael along the way, especially his best friend, Kyle, who saw him through so many difficult times and was always there to give him both love and tough love. Thank you to everyone who kept him in their hearts and prayers, including our church family at First Church of Christ, Unionville, and especially Tim Barth, who started as Michael's Sunday School teacher and became like a father to him.

A wake will be held on Thursday, March 2 from 5-8 pm at the Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main Street, Unionville. The funeral service will be held at First Church of Christ, Unionville, 61 Main Street, Unionville, on Friday, March 3, at 10:00 am. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Michael's memory may direct it to The Right Way Sober Living, 8600 Bridle Path, Davie, FL 33328.

Thinking of Mike extra today. Two years ago today, he randomly reached out after a while of losing touch asking to hang out and I ended up spending days with him at his house just coexisting. He lifted my spirits at a very hard time in life and this lead to months and months of practically living there, and I am forever thankful to Cindy for allowing me to do so. My heart is with his family and fellow friends everyday. Love for Mike for our 16 years of friendship and every second of everyday for the rest of my life.

I loved Mike, and I always have and always will. Mike has a special place in my heart. He is one of the smartest people I´ve ever met. He just radiates warmth when you meet him and he always had the most interesting perspectives on everything. Mike and I would talk for hours and his mind was so beautiful. He would make me laugh all the time without even trying. I miss our long conversations and listening to music together and hyping each other up. I´ve never met anyone like Mike before and I´ll always remember his warm, caring, sweet and light hearted demeanor. I will miss laughing with him and talking about life. I am heartbroken I am not able to tell him all of this today or ever see him again. Mike, I will be listening to our playlist forever!!! To Mike´s family, I hope you can find peace. I am lucky to have known Mike.

Had lunch with Michael a week before his passing in a park on a lake. Our conversations were deep and beautiful about how to overcome pain, injury, trauma and addiction that started before his first breath. We didn´t have any answers . He spoke of how blessed he was to have the beautiful family he had. Mother Nature was with us and Michael and I saw her messages. He even pointed them out. They make sense now... we saw a single vulture circling very close just above our heads, symbolic of death and rebirth. There was a lizard on the root of the tree directly in Front of us symbolic of detachment and letting go. There was a Great Blue Heron that landed in the water less than ten feet away, its meaning, spiritual awakening and self awareness. And finally there was a beautiful butterfly that was randomly making circles as if performing just for us, our interpretation was innocence and transformation. Michael was very advanced in his spiritual beliefs and understanding despite his addictions. He was brilliant, caring and fearless. He knew he had a very important life purpose, unfortunately for all who loved him, he chose to do it on the other side where there is no pain. I am grateful to have known and loved him. He truly was and still is a gift to us all. Blessed be sweet child.

My heart hurts, and while I continue to pray for the family who so loved and cared for Michael my mind also has moments of brighter days - like taking young Michael on a ride on our pontoon boat in Michigan boy did our little daughter sure take a liking to him..it was pure joy to see their young faces shining bright. Cindy thank you for reminding me recently of that famous Lee dal Lee little saying, he was the cutest baby boy ever. Love you all, in our prayers. Shelley (and Lorie)
