Eugene Curtis Bullard, 95, longtime resident of Bellaire, died February 27. He was born January 5, 1920, the fifth of eight children of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Perry Bullard of Roseboro, North Carolina. After serving in World War II, he married Iris Schroder and moved to Texas. Upon graduation from The University of Texas, Gene embarked upon a 35-year career with Continental Oil Company.
A man of vision and self- sacrifice, Gene spent nearly 30 years post-retirement volunteering at such places as the Henshaw House, the Nature Discovery Center at Russ Pitman Park, and S.C.O.R.E. A recycling advocate, he helped start the Bellaire recycling program. He was an avid walker which enabled him to live medication free until 4 days before his death.
Son-in-law Ken White remarked, "In 29 years, I did not ever see him bring attention to himself, rather focusing on others and enjoying their achievements."
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, 7 siblings, and his wife of 66 years. He is survived by his four children: Iris Foster (John) of Midland, Philip Bullard (Anita) of North Richland Hills, Jill Almaguer (David), and Karen White (Ken) all of Houston. He is also survived by the six grandchildren whose college educations he helped underwrite: Andrew and Rebecca Bullard of Dallas, Diana Foster of Austin, Jack Foster (Blair), Logan and Kayla White of Houston, and Laura White (Jeremy) and great granddaughter Madilyn of Ft. Worth.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 5, at 2 p.m. at Forest Park Westheimer, 12800 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX, 77077. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated by the Nature Discovery Center (www.naturediscoverycenter.org) at Russ Pitman Park, 7112 Newcastle, Bellaire, TX, 77401 or Bellaire United Methodist Church, 4417 Bellaire Blvd in Bellaire where he was a member for over 50 years.

I have memories of Mr. Bullard walking down the street to his home, a tall and gentle man. We lived next door for many years. What a blessing to have your Dad here for so many years. God bless Mr. Bullard and his family. Cindy Kanady Hughes

Whenever walking past the fountain and pond in Russ Pittman Park or tossing a can in the park's recycling barrel, I think of Mr. Bullard and his commitment to keeping the fish stocked. I appreciate his gentle and accepting way of welcoming my son and me into the Garden Club and the Wednesday Willing Workers.
