Edward Miner Obituary

Formerly of Circleville, Ohio, Dr. Edward C. Miner, Professor of Sociology and Psychology, passed away after a long struggle with lung and heart disease on October 2, 2018. He was a native of Warren, Ohio, and attended Warren City Schools where he graduated from the Machine Technology Program. Ed earned a B.S. in Philosophy and Religion from Youngstown State University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Kent and Akron Universities. Dr. Miner joined the faculty at Shawnee State University in 1983 and earned tenure in 1988. Edward served as President and Vice President of the Shawnee Education Association for 10 years and negotiated four contracts for faculty. As Department Chairperson and Core Coordinator for the Social Sciences, he served on and chaired numerous committees including Presidential and Provost Search committees. Ed wrote the Psychology and Sociology Degree Programs and Core Program for the Social Sciences. He took pride in teaching over 22 courses in sociology, psychology and business while receiving excellent student evaluations for teaching. Dr. Miner also taught as an Adjunct Professor at Youngstown State and Ohio University.
During his tenure at Shawnee State, Edward received a Presidential appointment to the NAIA Athletic Committee and received several extra mile awards for the Ohio Education Association for his work as Shawnee Education Association President. Ed was given the Ambassador of Labor Award by the Southern Ohio-Northern Kentucky Labor-Management Board, was recognized in Who's Who among America's teachers and elected to the Warren G. Harding Academic Hall of Fame. He also served on the local Portsmouth Board of Goodwill and the Y.M.C.A.
While in Warren, Edward worked as a Youth, Camping and Extension Director at the Y.M.C.A. (1969-75) and the Ohio Edison Company (1959-68). He also worked briefly at Republic Steel, Mullins Manufacturing, A & P Tea Co., and Islay Dairy. Along the way Ed met a lot of people, especially while at the Y.M.C.A., that helped him grow in various ways. Good neighbors and parents were important. Ed also spent four years active duty in the Army Reserves in Lockbourne, Ohio.
Dr. Miner retired from Shawnee State in (2005) to spend time with his family, friends and pursuing his hobbies which include: reading, writing, and finally taking a "swing" at golf. He liked to hunt and fish as well as playing racquetball and basketball. He was known for taking a "stand" for what he believed. He liked helping others, had a great wit and loved to laugh. Conversations with him included a magical mixture of orneriness, wit, seriousness, wisdom and esoteric references to popular culture. Our beloved father-husband lived his life well but will always be remembered for the wonderful memories we shared. Above all Ed loved his family and friends.
Edward is survived by his wife of 59 ½ years (Betty Lou), children Edward Jr. (Doreen) and Deborah Browning (Tim); brother-Don and grandchildren Melinda, Frank, Marissa, Jacob and Elizabeth.
Ed was preceded in death by his beloved parents Kenneth Miner, Virginia (Bertuzzi) Miner, and brother Kenneth Bert (Bud) Miner.
A brief memorial service visitation will be held on October 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM, at the Presbyterian Church, 134 Mound St., Circleville, Ohio 43113. Ed has requested cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Pickaway County Y.M.C.A., 440 Nicholas Dr., Circleville, Ohio 43113, to be dedicated to youth programs, or the Pickaway Senior Center, 2105 Chickasaw Dr., Circleville, Ohio 43113. My condolences and prayers to the family. Dr. Miner was my Sociology teacher at Shawnee Community College 1983. ( Before it became a University in fall of 1986). I enjoyed his class immensely. His opening remark was " I am a Miner Striving to be a Major...". loved his method of teaching and the concern he showed for his students. He will be missed by all that were/are fortunate enough to know him. Prayers.
