Louis Skinner Obituary

SKINNER, JR., DR. LOUIS COTTEN, 88, of Coral Gables, & Chapel Hill, N.C., died at his Florida home on Saturday, April 23. A Native of Greenville, North Carolina, Dr. Skinner became a resident of Coral Gables in 1950. He and his late twin brother, Edward, attended Asheville School for Boys in Asheville, N.C., where together they composed the school song. The library at Asheville School was donated by Dr. Skinner in memory of his late brother. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel hill, where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and a member of the Gimghoul Castle Society, and received his medical degree from the John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. During his years at UNC, Dr. Skinner, an avid musician, formed a Jazz Band which entertained at local parties and , during the summer months, on transatlantic cruise ships. In 1942, Dr. Skinner was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army. He served until 1945. Internationally renowned as a food and wine connoisseur, Dr. Skinner was founder and ex- president of the Miami branch of the International Wine & Food Society, and founder and Maitre of the Miami Chapter of the Commanderie de Bordeaux. He was officer-Commandeur of the Chevaliers du Tastevin and Charge de Missions of the Confrere de la Chaine de Rotisseurs. The exclusive Society of Bacchus America (one new member per year) elected him "Mr. Gourmet" for 1982. A practicing Dermatologist for many years, Dr. Skinner also taught classes at the University of Miami Medical School. Dr. Skinner, who was the son of the late Dr. Louis Cotten Skinner and Daisy Minor Skinner of Greenville, N.C., is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Skinner Calhoun, a niece, Alice Calhoun Smith and a nephew, Charles Dobyns Calhoun, Jr., all of Sarasota, Florida, and his beloved friends, Arnulfo Corrales & Jeanne Bates de Corrales. Dr. Skinner was preceded in death by his twin brother Edward Ficklen Skinner and his sister, Cotten Skinner Shepard. A Memorial Service will be held 5:00 PM, Saturday, April 30th at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 5690 SW 88 Street. Lou was a very special person to my family. My husband and I have fond memories of the evening he was the perfect "Master of Ceremonies" at an International Wine and Food Society Dinner. He will be truly missed.
