Helen Smith Obituary

Helen Crume Smith, 73, took one step into eternity at Sky Lakes Medical Center on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, with family at her bedside.
She was born on Sept. 9, 1934, at Klamath Agency, Ore., to her parents Joseph Crume and the former Angeline Schonchin.
Helen's passion was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also a word game puzzle fanatic and enjoyed her TV game shows.
Helen was dedicated to her tribe and its traditional ways. It was important to her that Indian youth learn to understand and appreciate their culture, heritage and education. Helen promoted her beliefs by being a member of many committees, including Tribal Council, Klamath Alcohol & Drugs and Indian Education.
She is survived by her brother Wayne "Sonny" Crume; children Arlo, Gail, Sherri and Sheila; grandchildren Patrick, Gregory, Neil, Aralia, Sheea, Angeline, Warren, Samuel, Bear, Clayton and Eli; great-grandchildren Nathaniel, McKaila, Samantha and Tristan; plus numerous other relatives and many friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Stanley, brothers Melburn and Raymond and two infant children.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Chiloquin Big Gym with Steve Weiser officiating. Burial will follow at Chief Schonchin Cemetery, Sprague River, Ore. Lunch will follow at the Irwin Weiser Memorial Community Center in Beatty, Ore. Those wishing to bring a dish or food donation may call Leah at 783-3967.
Visitation for Helen will be held today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chapel. Davenport's Chapel of the Good Shepherd, directors, is in charge of the arrangements.

Thank you for your thoughts prayers. It is a comfort knowing that my Mom was a part of all of your lives and we all miss her terribly. I have copied the Guest Book words and put them on my website nativebydesign.com and will continue to add pictures and stories as people send them to me. I'm sorry it has taken so long to thank everyone but it is a struggle everyday without her. Thank you all again, Gail (Helen's eldest daugther)

Helen was an incredibly hard worker, dedicated to teaching young people the value of our traditional ways. I will remember many times with Helen when she passed on her wisdom. I learned a great deal about both life (how to live it) and death (how to live with it) from Helen. I am thankful that she was in my life and in all of yours.

I was a student at the Oregon Extension and had the privilege of meeting Helen and hearing her story while studying there two years ago. Hearing her story has meant a great deal to me, and I still think of Helen often. Even though I only knew her briefly, she has been an inspiration to me. My heart goes out to the family, as well as my thoughts and prayers. Peace and blessings.

I have many memories of Helen, she was a huge mentor when I was younger and always told me finish school, fight for your rights as a native and learn what you can. I am grown now and I have and still am continuing to do what she has told me. One fond memory I have is that when I was an old school jingle dress dancer, starting out, she would lend me her tail fan during my competition, I love her and her family so much. I found out too late and wished I could have went to her services, I hold this woman in High regard and prayer for the family as I know they were her number 1... I usd to travel with these guys to pow wows and it meant a lot to see how involved she was with her kids and grandkids...rest in peace Helen, the Klamath people lost a great, great influence....

Helen was also a great influence in my life. She was always there to put me in my place. She taught me a lot that I may pass on to some of my own, one day.
