Christopher BEHNSEN Obituary


December 31, 1931 - June 6, 2012

Passed away in Cowichan District Hospital after a brief illness.

He will be missed by his companion, Billie. Survived by his sisters: Shirley, Maxine, Merle and Linda. Children - Joyce ( Al ), Sue (Alex), Bill, Beth (Eddy), Alaine and their mother, Hazel. Grandchildren - Derek, Kim; Michael, Bryce, Kelcie; Tyler.
Great grandchildren - Hudson , Spencer , Ben , and Rilynn.

Chris was born in Victoria to Henry Behnsen and Lillian (Plaxton) - named after grandfather, `Cougar' Chris Behnsen a Shawnigan Lake hunter. He shared many memories of good times growing up in the depression, biking from Victoria to his grandparents in Shawnigan Lake for lunch.

Racing Stock cars at Western & Shearing Speedways 1950 - 1954 and working on the `booms' at Youbou Mill. 1957 moved to Sandspit, Queen Charlotte Islands to work on tugs for Crown Zellerbach, son Bill was born there.

Back to Lake Cowichan in 1959 where he worked on the Lake driving Tug, hauling Booms from Caycuse & Nitinat to Lake Mills and the `Foot', pulling overnight tows, for 37 years .

Memories of using the Tug to get the annual Regatta's set up and weekend picnics with the family.

Chris belonged to the Lake Cowichan Kinsmen Club, Elk's Club and the Legion where he enjoyed the weekly Crib Club. ,

Over the years he enjoyed water skiing, hunting, fishing at Renfrew, going to the Neiser's cabin in the Chilcotins.

We will miss Dad's Birthday family get togethers on New Year's Eve. A tradition often with grandkids included.

A special thank you to neighbours, Tom, Denise & Wayne for 'being there'.

There will be a private gathering to share a `ride on the Lake' in honour of Dad, the Tugboat Captain, Race Car Driver, Hunter, Fisherman.

Dad always called ~ A spade a spade ~
He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Behnsen Family
Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. Mel and Chris worked together for thirteen years tugging up and down the Lake and as you said many fun times for the families on the Westminster Boy.
