I absolutely adored Dr. Garrett. I was referred to him when he was at UNC and I subsequently followed him back to Duke. He was always so caring and always went the extra mile or more to try to help me with my creaky knees. I always laughed that we discussed cars, football (I'm from Florida State, so those discussions were spirited, but with a lot of laughter and mischief waiting to happen, then eventually we'd get to discussing my knees). I'm so sorry to hear of his passing, he was such a great man and person. I moved back to Florida in 2014 so that's why I'm just now hearing the news. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will always have a fond place in my heart.

He was one of the kindest doctors I ever had. Last time I saw him he put his hand on mine and smiled his sweet smile all the while knowing my situation was not good and he truly showed so much compassion in that one moment. Much more than most doctors I have ever known. He was a tremendous asset to Duke and a great doctor. I will never forget his kindness.

I remember the morning of my son Perrie's surgery I asked Bill if he was going to take good care of him. He said I'll do the best I can, but I'm a little hung over He was a great Dr. and always kind on the NHS soccer sidelines.

So sorry to hear about Dr Garrett's passing, he did 2 (or 3) of my knee surgeries and was always relaxed, funny and a joy to be around. I will miss as I'm sure his other patients will to.

It is with great sadness I learned of Dr. Garrett's death. I had the immense pleasure of working with him as an operating room nurse for the better part of twenty five years. I enjoyed his sense of humor (always used to ask the new resident for a "becher rasp"), his stories, his professionalism, and his collegiality. I will miss him.

This truly saddens me.
Bill repaired two torn menisci for me. Though I had researched several doctors in the area, the "word on the street" among nurses and others who had knee ligament problems was "go to Dr. Garrett if you have a meniscus issue." Although I was in considerable pain whenever I saw him, he always managed to make me laugh. He was not only a surgeon of some considerable skill, he was also a very genuine and compassionate human being.
I'd occasionally pass Bill in the Duke North Hospital where I work. Even 6 years after I had last seen him, he recognized me as a patient and commented on how well I was walking. I found that remarkable.
My deepest condolences to his wife and family.
