Lamar L. Houston TAYLORSVILLE Lamar Lafayette Houston, 82, formerly of Taylorsville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at Universal Health Care in Ramseur, after an extended illness. Lamar was born Aug. 21, 1931, to the late Ralph and Espa Goble Houston in Catawba County. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Gilda Houston; an infant son, Gregery Dean Houston; brothers, Richard Houston, J.C. Houston, Holland Houston, Ronald Houston and Frankie Houston. Lamar was a lifelong member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Conover, where he served in various capacities in previous years. Lamar joined the U.S. Army National Guard in 1950 and accumulated over 36 years of service until retirement in 1991. During his service, he was nicknamed "super spoon" based on his ability to cook up good food in the kitchen during his duties as mess sergeant. After retirement from the National Guard, he worked five years with Moss Marlow Construction in Hickory and a number of years with the Alexander County Convenience Centers. Love ones left to cherish his memory include one son, Barry Houston and wife, Cathy, of Asheboro; one granddaughter, Emily Thompson and husband, Barron, of Walkertown; one grandson, Nathan Houston and wife, Kimberly, of Pittsboro; three great-grandchildren, Will and Ava Thompson, of Walkertown and Kelsie Houston, of Pittsboro; one sister, Martha Houston; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Conover, and the funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. with, the Rev.
