Mary A. Cummins Battle Creek Mary Alice (Harley) Cummins, 84, of Battle Creek, MI, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home on Thursday, January 8, 2009 in Battle Creek, MI. She was born April 14, 1924 in Lebanon, TN the daughter of David Haskel Harley and Martha Belle (Byers) Harley. Mary was a homemaker most of her life, however from 1944-46 she had worked at the famous Oak Ridge, TN plant where she helped build the atomic bomb. She didn't know what they were building and lived on the compound where they took the bus to work everyday. From about 1985-95 she worked with her daughter at the floral shop of "Country Bouquet" as a clerk and flower arranger and acted as the "boss" while she was there. She married Carl Thurman Cummins, Jr. on May 10, 1946 in Knoxville, TN. She is survived by her loving husband: Carl Thurman Cummins, Jr. of Battle Creek; three daughters: Kathy and Ed Williams, Cindy and Roy Smith, Molly Morris and Stuart Mendenhall, all of Battle Creek; two sons: Joe and Emilie Cummins and Gary and Shirley Cummins, all of Battle Creek; a sister: Bernice Fitzpatrick of Cookeville, TN; fourteen grandchildren: Jason and Nicole Brown, Shannon Brown, Andrea and Brian Barry, Christy Cummins and Sam Hamilton, Jennifer and David Stanton, Terra and Derek King, Justin Tindol, "C.J." Cummins, Jr., Chelsea Cummins, Charly Cummins, Curtis Smith, Joshua Morris, Hayley Morris, Dustin Morris; and eight great-grandchildren: Zack Lawrence, Bailee, Brooklyn, and Tyler Brown, Macklin King, Kamden and Karter Stanton, and Stella Barry. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Manuel Harley, and her granddaughter: Kayla Shirk (1987). Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble on Sunday after 12 noon, where the family will be present from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday, in the Bachman Funeral Chapel with Josh Hydrick, minister of 20th Street Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at the Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial tributes may be made to American Diabetes Association, Good Samaritan Hospice or Arthritis Foundation. Molly and Kathy and family. Sandy (Perkins) and I were so sorry to hear about your mom's passing. We stopped at the funeral home yesterday to see you all, but our timing was off. We loved looking at the pictures and remembering you guys in our "younger" years. What a happy family you have. I know God will bless you all and will put His comforting arms around you for comfort in this difficult time. Sorry we missed the funereal today. Carl and family dad and I were so very sorry to hear that Mary Alice had passed away. He just asked me the other day if we could go visit you guys sometime soon. He will try to come up tonight but if not I know he will make it to the funeral. Our hearts go out to all of you over the loss of your wife/mother. To the family of Mary Alice I send my condolences as I knew her very well. As I grew up with just across the way from the Cummin's in Newtown when I was young & was good friends with her daughters, especially Molly & Cindy but I knew the whole family very well. She was a wonderful lady & would help anyone she could. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. God be with you all.
