Arthur Dowling Obituary

Arthur Laurence Dowling, age 92, died on October 24, 2011 at Stonegates Health Center in Greenville, Delaware.
He was born in 1919 in New York City and was the son of Laurence Dowling and Kathleen Tuttle Dowling. Arthur grew up in Spring Valley and Great Neck, New York. He graduated from Great Neck High School and in 1941 received a B.A. degree from Amherst College where he was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. The day following his graduation from Amherst, he reported to the United States Navy for duty in the Officers Training Program. He served his country during World War II and the Korean War and remained in the Naval Reserves retiring as a Commander.
In 1945 Lieutenant Commander Arthur Dowling was awarded the Navy Cross by the President of the United States for "extraordinary heroism as Commanding Officer of the rescue vessel U.S. S. PCE(R) in action against enemy forces during the amphibious assault and capture of Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, from April to June, 1945."
Arthur received an MBA from NYU in 1956 and pursued his business career in New York City and Houston, Texas. He retired as Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations for the MW Kellogg Co., Pullman Kellogg and Vice President of Kellogg International in London. He represented his company in 1970 as part of the business delegation to the People's Republic of China in the early efforts of our country to open China to America business.
He was a loving husband to his wife of 60 years, Polly Russell Warner Dowling, who predeceased him in 2000. They were married at All Saints Episcopal Church in Great Neck and later were members of Christ Episcopal Church in Manhasset, New York and St. Martins Episcopal Church in Houston. He was a member of the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, the Union League Club in New York, the Houston Racquet Club, and the Greenville Country Club. He was active in many professional and civic organizations throughout his life. In 1963 he was president of the Munsey Park Association in Manhasset and in Houston he was president of the Public Relations Society of America in 1975 and the Tanglewood Association in 1985. In 1992 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Forum Club of Houston. For decades Arthur served Amherst College as his class agent.
He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Dowling Tanner of Duluth, GA, Louise Dowling Roselle of Wilmington, DE, and four grandchildren, Louise Tanner Gracey of Atlanta, Dr. William Gordon Tanner of Duluth GA, Arthur Charles Roselle of Charlotte, NC, and Cynthia Roselle Koenig of Wilmington, DE. He is also survived by 10 great-grand children.
A private funeral and burial service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Amherst College, Attn: Development Office, PO Box 5000, Amherst, MA 01002-5000.
