1916-2016
Clifton Eugene King, known affectionately as "King" and "Bud," passed away on January 12, 2016 at the age of 99. King was born in Grantville, Kansas on July 29, 1916 and grew up in Topeka, Kansas. He attended college in Kansas and moved to Houston in 1936. In 1942 King entered the United States Marine Corps and served as a Sergeant in the Pacific Theatre until 1945. He returned to Houston following his discharge from the service and worked at Southern Blue Print in various capacities, becoming its president, and later at Keuffel & Esser Co. as branch manager and district manager. After retirement King became an avid ham radio operator. King was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Edith Japhet King, and is survived by his sister, Lenore Gambrill of Hanceville, Alabama, daughter Genie Frye and husband John of Sugar Land, son Charlie King and wife Anna of Austin, grandchildren Matt Frye and wife Stephanie, Kristin King Burchell and husband Joe, Tim Frye and Ben King, and five great grandchildren, Sarah, Henry, Evelyn and Charlotte Burchell and Edie Frye.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 30 at Calvary Episcopal Church, 806 Thompson Road, Richmond, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club, PO Box 2997, Sugar Land, TX 77487-2997, the Texas State Library Talking Books Program, PO Box 12516, Austin, TX 78711-2516, or Calvary Episcopal Church.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Colonial Oaks at First Colony who provided loving and compassionate care to King over the last three years.
