Dr. David Brooks Boyd

David Boyd Obituary

DAVID BROOKS BOYD, M.D. died on Blanca Massif near Alamosa, Colorado on September 3, 2008 in a mountain climbing accident. He was born in Houston, Texas on March 13, 1961. After graduating from the University of Texas, David attended medical school at UTMB in Galveston, Texas. David specialized in Radiology, doing residency at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He also completed fellowship training at M.D. Anderson in Houston, Texas. He joined Houston Northwest Radiology Association where he practiced for 16 years. David's primary clinical interests were MRI and Interventional Radiology. He was certified by the American Board of Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology and was a member of the American College of Radiology, the Harris County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association. David was one of the brightest and most skilled radiologists to ever practice in the northwest Houston area. David was brilliant, humble, thoughtful and caring. He touched thousands of lives in his medical practice and was loved equally by his patients, colleagues, and hospital staff. He was a pillar of strength for his group and all of their hospitals. "We will never get over his loss. We will never forget him," said one of his partners, Eric Hardee, M.D. While a student at the University of Texas, David began competing in triathlons and later in races involving mountain biking, cyclocross, orienteering, ultra running and adventure racing. He founded and was captain of the adventure racing team M.O.A.T. (Mother Of All Teams). His athletic accomplishments are numerous. Among the highlights are Texas State MTB Championships, The Transrockies Challenge in 2005 and 2006, and XPD Tasmania-2005, Primal Quests Moab-2006 and Montana-2008, and the Leadville 100 in biking and hiking in the same month winning the double buckle award. His brother Charles G. Floyd, maternal grandparents Charles and Doris Gribble, and paternal grandparents Dr. Adam N. and Bertie S. Boyd preceded him in death. He is survived by his parents, Judy G. Viebig, and Charles S. and Sarah Boyd and Dick Viebig, his brothers Thomas P. Boyd and wife Alison, and C. Andrew Boyd, and his sisters Martha M. Masiello and husband Matt, and Anne A. Pinkerton and husband Peyton; step-brother John S. Abrams and wife Laura and stepsister Elizabeth M. Abrams and his niece and nephews Christopher and Emily Boyd, Jack, Dylan and Cole Masiello, and Jim and Will Abrams. David's love, Cheryl Hibbard and her daughters Aubrey and Presley also survive him. David was everyone's favorite, a cherished friend and the best teammate. He leaves a great void in his loving community of colleagues, friends and family. He was known for his great abilities, his humility and his love of the outdoors. Comments from his fellow racers show the depth of his generous spirit; "Dave Boyd, a Houston-based doctor, triathlete, adventure racer, mountain biker, hiker, mountaineer, and otherwise outdoor junkie whose athletic endeavors were surpassed only by his character and humility," and "He was a world class athlete and more importantly a world class human being. He was always there to lend a hand expecting nothing in return. He was gracious in winning and even more in defeat." His unconditional support of Team M.O.A.T., mountain biking events and fellow bikers was renowned, and David supported promising young mountain bikers and adventure racers, even making their college education possible. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The David Boyd Kids Kup Memorial Fund for the Texas Bicycle Coalition Education Fund, POBOX 1121, Austin TX 78767; www.BikeTexas.org, or to the charity of your choice. The date of the memorial service in celebration of David's life has been rescheduled, and will be held Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church, 1900 Bering Drive, Houston Texas, 77057.

Each morning I saw David at the hospital, I knew it was going to be a good day. David’s relaxed manner always took an edge off the day. His hard-working ethic was inspiring and infectious. I would always try to work harder just to keep up with him. I will always have the memories of Boyd sitting at the workstation intensely interpreting study after study with nothing fazing him. Once we were all caught up, he would kick his feet up on the desk and rock his chair back. We would talk about life and his most recent adventure or his next trip. Every time I see a report with his name on it, I pause and a memory of him flashes. I will never forget you, David.

I feel privileged that, in my lifetime, I met someone that embodied the rare virtues of honesty, integrity, courage and humility. If I can achieve a mere fraction of what Dave accomplished – by deed as well as by inspiring others – then I will have lived a full life.

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you're a leader. My BOSS and most importantly my friend David Brooks Boyd M.D was definitely a BORN LEADER!!! We have all been touched and inspired through all you've done outdoors and indoors. You're the perfect example of a extraordinary human being. It has been my honor to work with you all these years and to just have known such a beautiful soul. You have given me so much and I will never forget you. I know we will meet again in due time. I pray the memories of you will bring peace to all your friends and family.

P.S All these years you have sent me pictures of you and your adventures. "Maybe you can throw darts at them" you said.. I want you to know I put them to good use. I LOVE YOU ALWAYS!

Dave invited me to travel to Montana with him and Team MOAT as their photographer while they competed in Primal Quest this past summer. It was an unforgettable experience to be a part of, truly one of the most memorable of my life. I got to know Dave during that trip as more than just an accomplished athlete at the top of his game. He was also a friend and mentor who loved life and shared his passion for racing and the outdoors with all those around him. It was hard to hang out with Dave and photograph him and Team Moat having all the fun and not want to take part. So shortly after my trip to Montana, on July 26, 2008, I did my first adventure race. I can honestly say that I’m hooked. Thanks to Dave.

Rest in peace my friend.

There are many memories that I relish and relive at this tragic time. Knowing Dave since we attended UT then UTMB together was truly a gift that I was lucky enought to experience fror years. We travelled the world together and enjoyed good times and suffered through bad times. How ironic he was the best athlete I ever knew and died so yound. He leaves a huge void and I cannot imagine the grief of his family and his beloved girlfriend. Big hugs to all and there is a little bit of Bogus living in all of us....Love, Mike "Lif" Lifshen

Successful, good-looking, and an incredible athlete. The kind of person that we want to hate, because we want to be like them. Dave was all those and more. He was truely my inspiration for humility and compassion when faced with adversity and that never ending voice in the back of your head telling you to slow down or give up. I often asked myself during a long race when everything hurts and that voice is calling....I ask myself, what would Super Dave do? I want to be just like him. I will see you back at the top my friend and save a spot on the podium for me.

It was an honor to know Dave. It saddens me to lose my hero and to deal with this so far away from family, friends, and teammates. I've always looked up to the "legend", not only for his athletic abilities, but also for his interpersonal skills. He woud always make time for a friend and encouraged others. We can all learn a lot from Dave and the kind of man he was. He will be sorely missed. RIP Dave Boyd. I miss you.

I was one of the lucky ones who got to know Dave as a friend, teammate and competitor. If you were lucky enough to be with him while he was sharing his love of the Great Outdoors, then you truly got to see him living life to the fullest!! His charity for life, friends, peace and happiness will be solely missed. But one thing we all know, is that he Loved us all very deeply, as demonstrated by his rib breaking hugs.
Goodbye Dave, thank you for the light that you were in our lives and the wind you were beneath our wings! PS.. thanks for the tow!

I had the pleasure of racing with Dave at the Arctic Team Challenge in Greenland in 2007 during which time we spent two weeks racing and living together. I had my family with me which is sometimes not greeted well by many adventure racers. Dave didn’t mind though. In fact, I have never seen my son Alex take so well to anyone as he did Dave. Kids know a good person when they meet one and Dave was one of the best. Dave, you will be missed Brother. God Bless.

Dave was not only one of my immediate boss' but was like a son to me. He was a "man's man" who absolutely loved anything outdoors. He gave 150% in everything he did, as a physician with his patient's, and to his many friends and loved ones. Just to say you knew him was an absolute priviledge and honor. There is such a terrific void in my heart for this fine giant of a man. All we can do now is hold onto our memories. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends during this sorrowful time

In loving memory of a wonderful person David Brook Boyd:
It was heavy heart to hear of David’s passing. I will always cherish my memories of David, the outstanding person he was. I thank him for teaching the love of the great outdoors. Waterskiing (bare footing), fly fishing, and hunting were just a few of the beauty things in life he opened me too. I would like to think that he passed doing what he loved! I would like to think he is with is passed black lab, Harley and they are getting ready for their next trip. Please accept my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Dave showed us a way of life that is unusual and rare. The sweat, the hard work, the random acts of kindness, the planned acts of kindness, and the joy of getting dirty. Bumps, bruises and scratches are signs of life and his kind of fun. I will think of Dave often and doing this will make me a better man. He has given me the ability to look with compassion and curiosity as to how I can make another persons life just a little better.
I really feel he will be watching over us....and those of us who know him, know he will have done extensive research on the gear and be using only the best, brightest, lightest, most cutting edge gear to perform this task!!!
Dave is a legend in my book!

Someone I recently informed of Dave's passing thanked me and then stated that they did not know him that well but they will miss him. I told them, "even if you met Dave only once you knew him."
During a really cold early February race a few years back I was doing my best to compete against Dave, which wasn't good enough. I was falling into the early stages of hypothermia while paddling and Dave shows up yelling at me; which I could barely hear. He clipped a bungee to my sevlor and paddled me to help. He threw me into a car to get warmed up. Oh, and of course, he jumped back into his Sevy to go on and win the race. Then he gave me his prize for winning, a Sunnto watch, which I wear for every workout. I will never forget you.
Thanks Dave!!

"There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle."
-Albert Einstein-
Upon reading the entries that have been left on David's page, I can see that he chose the latter. Love is the ultimate miracle. It shines a light into the world that is so brilliant, we can feel it's presence. David's light has not left you. It shines in your hearts and memories, and the greatest miracle of all is how that love that will help you to celebrate the amazing man that he chose to be. May you be comforted in the days ahead.

Dave Boyd was my hero in adventure racing. He made coming in first look sooo easy! He also started a scholarship fund for young adventure racers to help pay for race fees. My daughter Pamela was a recipient this past year and now loves to race. My prayers go out to Dave's family and close friends, that God would fill their void with hope and love. God bless you all.

Although I've not seen David in several years, I'll always consider him one of my best friends and certainly one of the very best people I've ever known. Dave had the unique ability to make me feel good about being me despite the fact that in any and everything we did together, I (and everyone else) paled in comparison to David. I've never known such a great person so full of humility and so devoid of arrogance. Bogus, you'll be missed.

David is my cousin who was always great to be around. Although as adults we hardly saw each other as we lived indifferent parts of the country, as kids we had the typical fun and mischief at family gatherings. He was generous, competitive, fun, and bright. My heart aches for those closest to him, especially Tommy and Anne. Our prayers for comfort go out to all of you.

I was privileged to know David well as a teenager and young man. I loved and admired him then for all the qualities that continued to grow and flourish in his adulthood. I regret that he was not in my life in more recent times and especially that for me and for those who cared for him, whether long or short, he is now gone forever. My heart goes out particularly to Tommy and Charles and to all the related Boyd families as well as his devoted friends, teammates and colleagues. May God bless you and keep you, David.
