Dr. David Brooks Boyd

DAVID BROOKS BOYD, M.D. died on Blanca Massif near Alamosa, Colorado on September 3, 2008 in a mountain climbing accident. He was born in Houston, Texas on March 13, 1961. After graduating from the University of Texas, David attended medical school at UTMB in Galveston, Texas. David specialized in Radiology, doing residency at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He also completed fellowship training at M.D. Anderson in Houston, Texas. He joined Houston Northwest Radiology Association where he practiced for 16 years. David's primary clinical interests were MRI and Interventional Radiology. He was certified by the American Board of Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology and was a member of the American College of Radiology, the Harris County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association. David was one of the brightest and most skilled radiologists to ever practice in the northwest Houston area. David was brilliant, humble, thoughtful and caring. He touched thousands of lives in his medical practice and was loved equally by his patients, colleagues, and hospital staff. He was a pillar of strength for his group and all of their hospitals. "We will never get over his loss. We will never forget him," said one of his partners, Eric Hardee, M.D. While a student at the University of Texas, David began competing in triathlons and later in races involving mountain biking, cyclocross, orienteering, ultra running and adventure racing. He founded and was captain of the adventure racing team M.O.A.T. (Mother Of All Teams). His athletic accomplishments are numerous. Among the highlights are Texas State MTB Championships, The Transrockies Challenge in 2005 and 2006, and XPD Tasmania-2005, Primal Quests Moab-2006 and Montana-2008, and the Leadville 100 in biking and hiking in the same month winning the double buckle award. His brother Charles G. Floyd, maternal grandparents Charles and Doris Gribble, and paternal grandparents Dr. Adam N. and Bertie S. Boyd preceded him in death. He is survived by his parents, Judy G. Viebig, and Charles S. and Sarah Boyd and Dick Viebig, his brothers Thomas P. Boyd and wife Alison, and C. Andrew Boyd, and his sisters Martha M. Masiello and husband Matt, and Anne A. Pinkerton and husband Peyton; step-brother John S. Abrams and wife Laura and stepsister Elizabeth M. Abrams and his niece and nephews Christopher and Emily Boyd, Jack, Dylan and Cole Masiello, and Jim and Will Abrams. David's love, Cheryl Hibbard and her daughters Aubrey and Presley also survive him. David was everyone's favorite, a cherished friend and the best teammate. He leaves a great void in his loving community of colleagues, friends and family. He was known for his great abilities, his humility and his love of the outdoors. Comments from his fellow racers show the depth of his generous spirit; "Dave Boyd, a Houston-based doctor, triathlete, adventure racer, mountain biker, hiker, mountaineer, and otherwise outdoor junkie whose athletic endeavors were surpassed only by his character and humility," and "He was a world class athlete and more importantly a world class human being. He was always there to lend a hand expecting nothing in return. He was gracious in winning and even more in defeat." His unconditional support of Team M.O.A.T., mountain biking events and fellow bikers was renowned, and David supported promising young mountain bikers and adventure racers, even making their college education possible.
