Dorothy Harrison Obituary

DOROTHY TYRRELL HARRISON was born in Goose Creek, Texas to Eula Meredith Tyrrell and Warren H. Tyrrell. Mr. Tyrrell was a Humble employee, just discharged from the U.S. Army. Dorothy passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2004 in a Baytown hospital at the age of 84 years. Dorothy attended school in Goose Creek, graduating from Robert E. Lee in 1937, and was a member of Trinity Tabernacle Church. She entered St. Joseph's School of Nursing and the University of Houston. Upon receiving her nursing degree in 1941, she returned to Goose Creek and worked at Goose Creek Hospital. In 1947, she was among a handful of nurses from Baytown summoned to the Texas City disaster area following the explosion where, for many days, she cared for the critically injured. In 1959, she began a thirty year career with Dr. Louis B. Hughes in Baytown. After retiring from nursing, she worked in the Harris County Tax office. Dorothy was a member of Memorial Baptist Church for many years, but transferred her letter to Wood Forest Baptist Church in the 1960s. Her last years were spent with her wonderful friends at Trinity Tabernacle. As a teenager, she was active in the Rainbow Girls and taught piano lessons to beginners. She was also a 50-year member of the Pilot Club, serving as President of the noon club in 1959-1960, and President of the evening club in 1985. She was a member of DeMolay Mothers Club and Texas A & M Mothers Club. She was on the Lifeline Board when it was first started and served for ten years, also serving as President. Dorothy had also been on the Board of the Bay Area Rehabilitation Center. As was customary of her loving spirit, she continues to give the precious gift of life as a tissue donor to others who will benefit from her generosity. Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, James A. (Jimmy) Harrison, mother Eula M. Tyrrell, Father W.H. Tyrrell, grandson Warren Thomas Harrison, Jr., and mother in-law Ruby H. Carpenter.
