Gretchen Truitt Obituary

GRETCHEN TRUITT was born November 15, 1935 to William Morgan Smith and Marguerite Smith in Jacksonville, TX. The family moved to Dallas in the mid-`40s. She married Dr. M. Everett Truitt while he was a medical student. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, her son, Dr. Timothy Truitt, his wife Susan, and their sons Tyler and Cody; her daughter, Valerie Icenogle, her husband Randy, and their daughter Ali; and her son, Dean Truitt. Nieces Leslie Schulte, Sandi Smallwood, and Holly Lovvorn, nephews, cousins Bert and Diane Hervey, brother-in-law James Truitt and his wife Brenda, who have been very supportive throughout her illness, also survive her. After teaching herself to type in high school, she supported her husband through medical school, internship, military service, residency, and years of pediatric practice while raising their three children. Once her children were grown, she went back to school and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a communications degree in 1984 from the University of St. Thomas. After graduating, she became a freelance writer and editor, specializing in the medical and business fields. She also participated actively in numerous organizations: IABC, the Pan American Round Table of Houston, Baylor Women's Faculty Club, a monthly dinner group with the Yorks and Eardleys, and countless other projects. She had a special gift to make friends laugh with unpredictable humor and lively personality. Throughout her life, she was always optimistic and unafraid to face challenges, even while bravely battling breast cancer to the end. She died peacefully on March 3, 2007. Her family is grateful to her family and friends who supported them throughout her very difficult final four months. A celebration of her wonderful life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Diabetes Association or a charity of the donor's choosing.

Dr. Truitt & family,
Prayers of comfort and peace to you. I knew Gretchen for just a few years through our association with IABC and its freelancer group. Conversation was always delightfully lively when Gretchen was at the table. I will treasure those moments and feel blessed to have known her.

What can I say about Gretchen! She was an awesome lady. I am not sure how long I was her hairdresser, but I believe it had been about 8 years or so. Every time she came into the salon we had such fun, and wonderful conversations. The chats were about travels, family, and fashion. Oh, and the latest book she was reading. Gretchen loved to hear about my kids and their music and school. She was always a fan of my husband Kelly, and was great support bringing others out to hear him play music. I could go on, and I was just her hairdresser!

I'm so sad for the loss of Gretchen. I did not know she was ill, and regret not seeing her for such a long time. She was such a happy vibrant lady, and loved to laugh. Our prayers from my family to your family. I really enjoyed working for you, for so many years. I truely don't believe there was a better doctor, or husband than you were. You supported Gretchen in so many of her wishes and dreams, as she did for you. God Bless, Dr.Truitt,Tim,Valerie and Dean and all your families. Love, Eileen Strong

Gretchen was a friend in high school. We shared lots of laughs together. We reconnected a few years ago via e-mail and caught up on each others' lives. She was a remarkable person. With sincere sympathy to her family,

Dear Everett and Family, How blessed my life has been to have known Gretchen for the last 15 years. Who knew when we met in London so long ago we would have remained friends all these years even at such a distance. I'll never forget going to a fine French restaurant with Gretchen wearing her rubber chicken necklace and animal print stockings. What a breath of fresh air.
She was so supportive of me and my husband Kent through our infertility issues and cried so hard when my sister called to tell Gretchen and Everett that our miracle son was born, that Everett thought someone had died.
I thank God everyday that we were able to visit Houston last April after not seeing Gretchen and Everett for almost 8 years. But always with both, it was like no time had passed.
My heart breaks for all of Gretchen's family and friends for the loss of such a vibrant spirit. We all have lost something so special.
With our deepest sympathy and love, Gwenn, Kent and Gabriel James
