James Hickox Obituary

JAMES REED HICKOX, born January 24, 1929, and a long-time Houston resident, passed away on March 16, 2002, in Bellville, Texas, where he had resided for several years. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Anne Simcic Hickox; his daughter Patricia Hickox Shute and husband Jonathan, of Crown Point, IN, and their children Matthew and Rebecca; his son John Reed Hickox and wife Nina of Denver, CO, and their children Austin and Devyn; his son Daniel James Hickox of Austin, TX; and his brother George K. Hickox and wife Virginia of Houston. Jim was born and grew up in Waukegan, IL. At an early age he became enamored with airplanes and flying. He became a private pilot and owned and flew several airplanes during his lifetime, for the pure pleasure of flying. He spent the early years of his working life in Waukegan, except for a short period of time in the U.S. Army at the end of WWII. He was employed by the American Medical Association in Chicago for many years before moving to Houston in 1970 to join the Harris County Medical Society as the Assistant Executive Director. In 1974 he became the Executive Director of the Society. In addition to managing all of the business affairs of the HCMS, he was very active in other medical community activities, including working with the Texas Medical Association, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, and the American Medical Association. Upon his retirement in 1992, he was asked by the HCMS to undertake the creation of the John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science - which he did from fundraising thru completion. Jim was an avid gardener and enjoyed that and other activities at his retirement home in Bellville. He had given up real flying, but he still enjoyed "flying" on his computer. A memorial gathering took place on March 17, 2002 and was limited to family members. For those desiring, in lieu of flowers, his family requests that contributions be made to the John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science, 1515 Hermann Drive, Houston, Texas 77004 or to Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 936 South Front Street, Bellville, Texas 77418. Jim,

It was a delight getting to know you here in Bellville and getting your help on all the Bellville Historical Society projects.

If that ancestor of yours had not sold the Yates field a few years before oil was discovered, you would have been filthy rich, and we probably would not have met. I will miss you.
