On the morning of November 11, 2015, Janie Vega passed away peacefully in her home in Houston, TX.
To know Janie was to know the strength of her determination, her love for her family, her joy and her dedication and faith in God. While cancer may have taken her body, it never stood a chance against her will, her maternal spirit, her gratitude, her insight, her joyous smile and sense of humor, or the comfort she found in God. In her life, challenges were as numerous as her blessings, but her spirit never wavered. Janie's path toward her reunion with God was greeted with the same confidence and deference to God's will that guided her through life.
Janie was a mother, not just to her own nine children and their families, but to every student she met, her church family, the people she helped to find homes through her business, and her brothers and sister. She was a leader in her profession, a problem solver for people in need, but before everything, a disciple for her faith. Her family mourns the loss of Janie's insight and wisdom, the memories she shared, and the selfless love and care she had for all people. But her family also celebrates her reunion with God, the peace she has found, and the people whose lives she touched along the way.
Janie is survived by her children Sharon Argueta-Vega, Debbie Cortinas, Florencio Vega III, Geneva Gomez, Sonia Becerra, Cynthia and Domingo Reyna, Jessica Vega, Raquel Vega, Ernest Vega, and their families; her brothers Isaac Valdez and Manuel Valdez, and their families; her cousin Angie Lopez; and all her grandchildren, great granddaughter, nieces and nephews. Janie is preceded in death by her mother and father, Maria and Manuel Valdez; her aunt Helen Gomez; her sister Alice Barboza; Eddie Lopez; ex-husband Florencio Vega, Jr.; and her son-in-law Jesus Gomez, Jr.
The family invites those who are able to join in remembering Janie to her wake on Friday, November 20 from 5-9pm, with a special service beginning at 7pm; and to a ceremony in her honor on Saturday, November 21 at 11am.
