Luisetta Chomel Obituary

Luisetta Chomel
1931-2016
Luisetta Chomel, age 84, passed away on Friday, the 20th of May 2016, at her home in Houston, in the company of her family and friends. She was born on the 26th of May 1931, in Torino, Italy, to Erberto and Severa Manacorda Elia.
Luisetta received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of St. Thomas, and her Masters in French and Doctorate in philosophy from Rice University. In 1972, she joined the faculty at the University of Houston as an Instructor of Italian. For nearly thirty years and as the Director of Italian Studies, Luisetta expanded the program of Italian studies to obtain a major in Italian and to incorporate architecture, Italian civilization and cinema into the curriculum. She was respected by her colleagues and loved by her students, and those who excelled were sent to study Italian in Perugia or Florence on summer scholarships. Luisetta was knighted in the order of the Star of Italian Solidarity of the Italian Republic in 1990. Nominated three times for the Master Teacher Award, she received it in 1994. Luisetta retired as Professor Emeritus and continued working within the Italian community to disseminate Italian culture everywhere. She authored two books, one on the subject of women in the literature of D'Annunzio, and another (co-authored with Paola Lorenzi) on Italian civilization and culture .
Luisetta is survived by her husband, Dominique Chomel; her daughter, Patricia Chomel and her husband, Maurizio Rota, and their son, Lorenzo Rota, her son Marc Chomel; her niece, Albertina Napoli and her husband Mario, and their children; as well as extended family on her husband's side.
A memorial service is to be conducted at twelve o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 28th of May, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to a scholarship fund that has been established in her honor at the University of Houston. I did not meet Luisetta , but of course knew of her from knowing Patricia and Dominique. They always spoke warmly of this accomplished and sensitive woman. My very deepest condolences and may her memory remain eternal.
Although I have not seen either of you in many years, my remembrances are always pleasurable. May God give you comfort during this time.

My deepest condolences to you Patricia and your father and brother. I remember your mother with great affection. I always looked forward to coming to your home for dinner and enjoying the great food, bowls of blueberries, and lots of laughter. I am living in Santa Fe and would love to be in touch.

A great mind, thorough intellect, with fine interdisciplinary grasp of language and the humanities, and a very fine, not only cultivated compassion, concern for humanity and the human condition overall. Knowing this all too well from her public appearances, and the too few classes I took from her, Luisetta will be sorely missed.

Luisetta was one of my favorite professors at UH. She made poetry, one of my banes, a ton of fun. And thanks to her I can still quote some Inferno from memory!
Luisetta, que tengas buen camino, querida.

I had the privilege of enjoying the gift of Luisetta's friendship for over thirty years. While we were colleagues at the University of Houston, and later, when we both retired, we talked about everything, we shared all that happened in our personal lives. We discussed world affairs, usually lamenting the ills of societies and expressing our hopes for a miraculous cure of the ailing world. Luisetta's input was different from mine in that she sprinkled it with citations from Dante and many other authors she worshipped. She tried to awake in her many grateful students her deep love of literature and the arts. Luisetta was my best friend, I hope I was hers. I live now in New York and cannot attend the funeral, but I believe that those who die live on in our loving memory. I will cherish my remembrances for as long as I live.
