I wish to offer sympathy to Dr. Ruiz's family. I was sad to learn of Dr. Ruiz's passing; it has brought to mind many memories of time with him while training. The top of that list is Friday Photo Conference.
I would like to echo another person who thanked you as his family for your support of Dr. Ruiz as he gave of himself to guide training of young physicians.
Know that I will be praying for your family during this time.

I am very saddened by Dr Ruiz´s passing. He was an inspirational leader and his accomplishments speak both to his incredible drive and talent. My life has been changed by his mentoring. I wish to say thanks to him and to his family in indulging his demanding schedule and for the inspiration and high standards that he created around him. I count myself very lucky to have been able to train with him . He will be missed but his enormous legacy will endure.

My deepest sympathy and condolences are extended to the family of Dr. Ruiz. As chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Houston, Dr. Ruiz gave me the opportunity to enter the field of ophthalmology,a gift that I have appreciated on a daily basis for the past 35 years. He was fiercely driven to achieve clinical excellence and imparted this attitude upon his residents. I still hear and use the lessons I learned from Dr. Ruiz. He was a unique man, ophthalmologist, and leader and will be greatly missed.

Dr. Ruiz was so good to me and so many other people. I owe him thanks for believeing in me and helping me become an ophthalmologist. I have been on the faculty at Duke for 21 years now. One of his best accomplishments was creating the art collection at the eye center for patients to enjoy. I never forgot when I brought in one of my paintings and he said, "How much do you want for it?" I was shocked! I believe it is still hanging there today. RIP.

I met Dr. Ruiz in 1994. I had gone to his office to ask if he might have suggestions for the vision research lab we were starting. Not only was he enthusiastic and supportive, but he also offered to provide funds through the Hermann Eye Fund. He said "get a grant proposal to me by tomorrow". We basically stayed up all night and gave him a proposal the next afternoon. Twenty-four hours later we had money to buy our first, advanced (at the time) DNA sequencer. Dr. Ruiz give us a terrific start and, further, he was always an enthusiastic and committed supporter of our research. Members of our research group and I met with him many times over the years. We received generous support from the Hermann Eye Fund and Dr. Ruiz helped us get grants from other sources. Needless to say, the money was extremely important to us in conducting our research. Of equal or more importance, though, was the enthusiasm and excitement he expressed for our work. We will miss him!

Our prayers and thoughts go out to Dr. Ruiz's wife and family in their incalculable loss.
Dr. Ruiz was so much to so many people. He was my husband's eye doctor for 28 years.
My husband has type 1 diabetes and developed diabetic retinopathy in 1991. A friend of ours told us about Dr. Ruiz and we scheduled a visit. Because of Brian's health and being self employed we could not get health insurance for him. No one would insure a Type I diabetic on an individual policy in the 1990s. But that did not matter to Dr. Ruiz. He took very good care of my husband's eyes and later on my eyes as well. My husband is 71, has had type 1 diabetes for 45 years and has his sight today because of the expertise and generosity of Dr. Ruiz. He was more that our doctor, he was a friend that we enjoyed visiting once or twice a year. Eye visits weren't just medical calls, they were a time for sharing about our families and catching up on what had been going on in his life and in ours. He loved the fact that both our children graduated from Texas A&M. He was like family to us and made us feel like we were part of his. Our last visit with him was not an eye visit but a visit to say thank you for all he had done for us and give him a hand make mantel clock that my husband had made especially for him in Brian's woodworking shop.
As many have said, we will never forget him and will forever be indebted to him for his influence in our lives. Thank you Dr. Ruiz.

Dr Ruiz,"Chief" to many, gave me the educational opportunity to practice ophthalmology for which I will forever be indebted. Well I remember his creed, a challenge he lived and practiced by: "strive for excellence!". Thank you, Dr Ruiz.

My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Richard Ruiz.
Dr. Richard Ruiz has been my friend for just over 20 years. "Doc", I, and the crew rode motorcycles together and shot sporting clays in the same squad for many, many years. I only had one shotgun. Doc had many. He loved to shoot as many of his guns as he could during every sporting clay event. He was kind enough to always let me use his 4 barrel (12, 20, 28, 410) set shotgun, his pump gun, and his side by side. I would always shoot behind him. After he would shoot, he would pass his gun to me so I could shoot. Not only was Doc known for having "all the gear" you need for a shoot, but he also always dressed honorably as a shooter. I was lucky enough to be close in size with him. He would always let me borrow his rain gear or warm weather gear as I typically forgot mine and he would bring twice as many than needed. He believed in taking pride in yourself. Showing up your best, for any reason. He would always praise me when I would follow in his footsteps and dress the part.
Doc was more than a shooting buddy to me. He was a mentor. He was a man that had great respect for family, his work, his strong beliefs, and his legacy. After reading his book, I had always made an intention to ask about his experiences. Being Hispanic myself, I looked up to him as I do my father. I was fortunate to be able to hang around another Hispanic man who focused and took pride in their energy and contributions to the world. He would coach me about business, responsible financial decisions, vehicles, and anything that I was dealing with or that he noticed that I was not paying attention to. He would encourage and praise me for getting through difficult times in health and business. He was one with strong opinions, which always made me smile! My father is the same. He called me several times after dealing with some frustrating health issues. It was nice to catch up and hear his voice. It was nice that he wanted to catch up with me. I am a better person having him in my life. I will hold on to his memory, his friendship, mentorship, and advice always.
