Robert Jewett Obituary

ROBERT (BOB) RICHARD JEWETT, 59, Sugar Land, Texas, entered into eternal peace Saturday, August 15, 2009 in the Houston Hospice after a brief battle with lymphoma. Bob was born October 4, 1949 in Dubuque, Iowa; son of Ronald R. and Katherine B. Jewett. Bob served in the USAF as a translator while living in Seoul, Korea. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of South Florida-Tampa with a degree in special education in 1976, receiving the Outstanding Graduate Student Award and Outstanding Senior Leader Award. He received his Masters in Education from Texas Southern University, Houston, TX. Bob was named Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. Bob began his career in education 33 years ago as a teacher with the Houston Independent School District, Austin High School. He later became a special education teacher in the Alief ISD and was quickly named as Assistant Principal for Martin Elementary School. Bob opened three Alief ISD schools in five years: Sneed Elementary (1990), Kerr High School (1993), and Klentzman Intermediate School (1995). In 1995, Bob joined Stetson and Associates, an educational consulting firm as an educational consultant. In this position, Bob was featured in ten national conferences on best practices in serving students with disabilities for the International Council of Exceptional Children. He is particularly known for his expertise in inclusive education, differentiated instruction, and behavioral supports for students with disabilities. Bob trained thousands of principals and teachers across the United States and was a regularly featured speaker at state and national conferences. For many years he left his home in Sugar Land to travel back to his home state of Florida, which he loved dearly. Go Gators! In spite of receiving his degree from South Florida, he was truly a Gator fan. Bob enjoyed traveling extensively during his time off, most notably to Ireland, England, Hawaii, Australia, Canada, and France. When asked his favorite country to visit, Bob always answered, "Ireland!" Bob is survived by his loving mother Katherine (Fort Walton Beach, FL.), his devoted sister Nipper (Atlanta, GA.). He is also survived by his brother, Barry, sister-in-law, Sarah (also of Fort Walton Beach) and his brother, David and sister-in-law Peggy (Albany, OR). His nieces, Kimberly and Kelli-Ann and one nephew, Barry, also survive him. He is pre-deceased by his father Ronald, and his sister Beth. Bob has had many friends and colleagues through the years but most notably he remained closest to his ex-wife Sandra Bartlett, his godson, Christopher Woodard, Susan Woodard, and his long time travel companion and friend, Paula Conley. His family plans a private Memorial Service for Bob on his favorite beach in Florida on what would have been his 60th birthday in October. Donations in the memory of Bob may be made to Special Olympics, an organization very close to his heart. Bob will be remembered for many things but most especially for his kindness, his generosity, his love of history, Gator memorabilia, and the depth of his knowledge and concern for children with special needs.

Fifteen years ago, Mr. Jewett interviewed and hired me for my job as Librarian of Kerr High School. He was Kerr's first assistant principal and did much in establishing Kerr High School in its first year of existence. Mr. Jewett was a kind, dedicated. hard-working, superb leader-educator. I have fond memories of him. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family and friends. I will make a contribution in his memory to Special Olympics. May he rest in eternal peace.

Bob was the epitome of compassion and professionalism. As a young teacher Bob was a profound influence and inspiration to me. Please know that Bob had and will continue to have an impact on the lives of children because he was the greatest teacher of teachers.

My heartfelt prayers are with all those who are grieving.

I attended Alief schools K-12 and I remember Mr. Jewett as being a part of a mojority of those years. I remember all of the Gator memorobilia in his office. The memory that remains with me is of him walking the halls of Kerr High School, talking to students. He had a passion for education and also cared greatly for all of us. All educators should mirror the compassion and drive he had.

With deepest sympathy,

Bob, our Mother and me Thanksgiving weekend 2007.

My brother was the kindest and best friend I have ever had. His absence in my life has laft a void I'm not likely to ever fill. My comfort comes in all the beautiful memories we shared and in knowing his suffering was short lived and with minimal pain. My dear sweet brother Bob, rest in peace and know how vast my love for you was. I was blessed to have you in my life as long as I did.
