Vanessa Pitangui Lucena Holzer

Vanessa Holzer Obituary

VANESSA PITANGUI LUCENA HOLZER passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on April 1, 2006. Vanessa was born to Dr. Jason and Nilda Lucena, both of whom pre-deceased her, into a large, traditional, accomplished, boisterous Brazilian family sprawling from Rio de Janeiro to Belo Horizonte, where she spent her youth. She leaves behind John, her husband of 38 years, son Jason and daughter-in-law Erika Holzer of Austin, son Erich Holzer of Houston, sister Sandra and brother-in-law Humberto Marini of Rio de Janeiro, and brother Celso Renato and sister-in-law Sonia Lucena of Belo Horizonte. In Brazil, Vanessa attended the Sacre Coeur and American schools and began a lifelong mastery of languages foreign to her native Portuguese. She became the first American Field Service exchange student in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, where she graduated from University High School and met her future husband, John Holzer, who was on Christmas break from university. The following summer Vanessa toured the USA with other AFS students, who were hosted at the White House by Attorney General Robert Kennedy, before she returned to Brazil. There she entered the Universidade Federal, where in just 2 years she was awarded both a BA in languages and the English certification from the University of Michigan, taught English at the Brazilian-American Institute, and served as secretary to the manager of the Bank of London and South America. Three years of correspondence between Vanessa and her future husband kindled a long distance romance, and in 1966 between terms in graduate school, John mounted a Pan Am Clipper for Brazil. The pair became engaged after two weeks of the customary observation and chaperonage by aunts from the extended family. A year later, the couple wed in Framingham, Massachusetts. John's Exxon career took the couple to many ports of call, and Vanessa's remarkable language expertise was in high demand everywhere. She was a translator for M.I.T. in Cambridge, MA on a project with the Brazilian Central Bank, wrote Portuguese copy at Vision magazine in Manhattan, and taught English at La Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, the Intercol refinery in Cartagena, Colombia and Lago Oil and Transport Co in Aruba, Netherlands Antilles, and Spanish at Riviera Day School in Miami. Her only sabbatical was a 3-year interlude in Rio de Janeiro where she luxuriated in the company of parents, 30 uncles and aunts, and 40 first cousins, all within a day's car trip. Vanessa arrived in Houston in 1986 and gave Portuguese lessons at Exxon Coal and Minerals. She began an 11-year career at St. Francis Episcopal Day School in 1989, starting as a Spanish teacher, soon heading the department, later also serving as 8th grade dean, and always bonding with hundreds of children and parents. In 1997, she won a coveted scholarship from the government of Spain and dedicated that summer to Spanish language and culture studies at La Universidad de Salamanca. In the classroom and socially, Vanessa sparkled with an easy smile, quick wit, expansive intellect, unerring style, and unceasing charm. Providentially, last year close friends from South America, the Caribbean, Europe and the US joined her at son Jason's wedding in Angra dos Reis, Brazil. Ever the warm Latin mother, Vanessa constantly showered her family with empathy, encouragement and love. Vanessa volunteered at the Women's Home and attended mass at St Michael's Catholic Church. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o'clock until eight o'clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 4th of April 2006, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons in Houston where funeral services will be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 5th of April 2006. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Mrs. Holzer has given me my basic understanding, love, and appreciation for Spanish. I am now currently teaching kindergarten, and I hope to one day be fluent and incorporate even more Spanish in my classroom than I am able to do now. I have so many fond memories of Mrs. Holzer. Her sense of humor is what seemed to shine through her teaching. She had such enthusiasm and spirit that radiated through the walls of her classrooms and was contagious in our learning. Although her passing saddens me, I find comfort knowing she is in a place now that knows no pain. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I remember beautiful Vanessa from Bogota, Colombia in the early 70s. She was a wonderful friend who mentored me through the birth of my only son, Alex. I think of her now with great fondness.

Senora Holzer was one of my favorite teachers at St. Francis. Learning the Spanish language from her was enjoyable and rewarding.

With my sympathies,

Mrs. Holzer was my Spanish teacher for many years at St. Francis. I was truly amazed while reading her obituary at all of her many accomplishments throughout her life. She was such a humble, kind and wonderful person who taught me so many things. Please know that she will forever be remembered by all the lives she touched during her 11 years at St. Francis. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time.

What a loss Vanessa is to us all. I have such wonderful memories of her as my friend and colleague. I will never forget her for her sense of style, appreciation of beautiful things, but what I will remember most, is her caring for others. Vanessa was a gifted Spanish teacher who was loved and respected by her students. What stood out about Vanessa with her students was her love for them and genuine interest in them.

One project she did with her classes was a "People" magazine in Spanish. The students wrote the stories in Spanish, took the pictures and published their magazine. The kids were always so excited to do this and Vanessa took great pride in their achievement.

Along with all the serious great things about Vanessa, I could write a book about all the funny experiences we shared. She had a wonderful sense of humor I will never forget and I cracked up a million times over her expressions and slant on life. I repeat them often and refer to them as "Vanessa-isms"

I offer my sympathy to her family as I know how much she loved you and how much she will be missed.

Mrs. Holzer was a beautiful woman and a wonderful teacher. She was my Spanish teacher throughout my years at St. Francis. I always looked forward to her class because she was so much fun and we always sat on the floor, never in desks. I'll never forget talking to her about boys and middle school dances. She will always be remembered by all of her students. I send my love to her family and boys that she loved talking about.

I am so sorry to hear about Vanessa's passing.I knew her as a parent at St. Francis and I taught with her for many years. Marty Stuyck, Vanessa, and I taught 8th grade together. We laughed and had many fun times together. I remember standing in the faculty line at several 8th grade graduations and laughing together that we would all have to retire the same year. Vanessa retired first and then Marty. I am still teaching and preparing for another graduation.

She was an elegant woman who I remember loving her husband and sons very much. She was so proud of her boys and would tell us about their lives and career advancements.

She will be remembered fondly and missed greatly.
