William(Bill) Mathias Obituary
1936-2021
William Julian Mathias, 85, entered The Heavenly Kingdom on October 17, 2021. Born in Glendale, CA. to Julian and Elizabeth Mathias, he moved to Texas as a youngster in 1948. Graduating from high school in Dallas he matriculated at Rice University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Geology in 1958. Following service as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers he joined IBM Corp where he served in sales and management roles during his 18 year career. The balance of his business career was spent in the field of executive recruitment where he was affiliated with several multinational firms including Preng and Associates, retiring in 2004.
Bill was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Eileen, in 2000. He is survived by his daughter Leslie Brogan and her husband Tim of Katy and his son William (Billy) J Mathias Jr and his wife Leslie of Houston. He is also survived by his grandchildren Meg and Tommy Mathias and Zachary Brogan. Also surviving are his sister Carolyn Kaltenbach and husband John, his niece Julie Cross and her son Josh Simmons, niece Deborah Countiss Lindsay and nephew Spencer Countiss. He is also survived by his companion of many years Ellen Cartwright May along with numerous friends and loved ones.
Bill lived an abundant life with a passion for his family, his church and Rice University. A lifelong Episcopalian, he served as a Vestryman at St Stephens in Ridgefield, Connecticut and The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Houston. In the Diocese of Texas he served on the Boards of St James House in Baytown and St Vincent's House in Galveston. An ardent supporter of Rice, Bill served as a term member of The Board of the Association of Rice Alumni and was a former member of The Rice Fund Council and The Owl Club.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00am Friday, October 22nd at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, 12535 Perthshire Rd, Houston Tx 77024.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to St Vincent's House in Galveston and The Rice University Owl Club.
