Winnie Johnson Obituary
WINNIE NETTLES JOHNSON, 84, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2005 after a brief illness. Winnie was born January 3, 1922 in Bunkie, Louisiana. She married Joseph C. (Jay) Johnson, a captain in the US Army Engineers, on December 27, 1941. She was his devoted and much loved bride for 64 years. Winnie was an amazing woman who was never fazed by the frequent moves required by being the wife of a military officer and oil company exploration executive. Winnie, Jay and their two children lived in Louisiana, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Mississippi, Texas, Denmark and Tripoli, Libya. She never failed to meet the challenge that each new assignment or transfer brought to the family, whether it required her to teach her children using correspondence courses or bargain for dress material in the old city market in Tripoli. After Jay retired from Exxon, he and Winnie traveled extensively, visiting England, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Japan. They took river barge trips on the Rhine, Nile, Columbia, Snake and Mississippi Rivers and sailed around the Greek Islands. Winnie was one of the founding members of the Northeast Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary and served in many capacities over a 30-year period. On Monday, August 22, Winnie was at her desk as a volunteer in the emergency room when she suffered a massive stroke. The family would like to thank all of the emergency room staff for the wonderful care they provided during those crucial first hours. Winnie was also an active member of the Kingwood United Methodist Church. She served for many years as the newsletter editor for the Kings Forest Homeowner's Association and was active in the Exxon Annuitants Club. She was a wonderful, caring person who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph C. Johnson; daughter, Kathy Johnson Luck of Kingwood; son and daughter-in-law, Byron and Rene Johnson of Kingwood; grandsons: Shane Johnson and wife Tara of Tyler; Carter Johnson and wife Suzy of Kingwood; great-granddaughter, Haley Johnson of Tyler; sisters: Helen McSwain; Dorothy Quinn; Edlene Turk and their husbands and families. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 3, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the Kingwood United Methodist Church, 1799 Woodland Hills Drive, Kingwood, Texas, with Rev. Joe Fort officiating. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kingwood United Church (1799 Woodland Hills Drive, Kingwood, TX 77339).
