George Medek Obituary
George Medek
1934 - 2015
George Martin Medek was born November 16, 1934 to George G. Medek and Cecilia M. Fitzgerald in Marshall, MO.
He was educated at Prairie Home School and Catholic Grade School in MO, then moved to Idaho with his parents during the 7th grade and went to St. Paul's Grade School, Central Junior High, Columbia Prep in Portland, and graduated from Nampa High School in 1953.
George worked farming and carpentry with his dad. After graduating, he went to Coyne Electrical School in Chicago and worked on the Pacific Railroad. George served 10-1/2 months in the Air National Guard. He married Virginia M. Korn on June 9, 1956 (he was active in Cabrini Club at that time) and moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. He worked various jobs; Proctor & Gamble, machinist at Woodward Governor & Instructor. Military drafted him to Fort Benning, GA for 3 months and then transferred him to Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, HI for 16 months. When George came back to Idaho in 1967, he sold Electro-Magic Steam Cleaners & Pressure Washers. In 2012, George had to have surgery to remove his colon (adenocarcinoma). Hernia surgery opened up more cancer 6 months later, which resulted in two and a half years of chemo. On February 8, 2015, a stroke happened on vacation in Oregon. The following rehab and therapy were very tiring and painful.
George enjoyed several fun activities including backpacking in the Sawtooth Mountains and camping, water and snow skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, riding his motorcycle and bicycle, and even hiking the historical Oregon Trail with a group for 9 years. He also coached Optimist Youth Football for four years, which was a big part of his son's life.
In 1963, he tore down a condemned building in Garden City and built our four-room home. George also built a cabin in Garden Valley at Castle Mountain-- this was 5 years of slavery; and it didn't get finished because it crashed in from an ice and snow buildup. That was the end of that project!
George volunteered at Bogus Basin Ski Club, Girl Scouts, Salt and Light Radio, Creegan Foundation, Rescue Mission, Corpus Christie, the St. Mary's food bank, and was a Knights of Columbus volunteer for 46 years. He always had a helping hand.
After no vacation for 17 years, we bought two timeshares and that got him started. He traveled to Mexico, the Bahamas, Austria, Denmark, British Columbia, Hawaii, Oahu, Kauai, Fiji, Japan, Copper Canyon of Mexico, all the western and southern states, one cruise to Alaska, and two Caribbean cruises. George loved the Owyhee County historical day trips and all the dirt and gravel in nearby counties. He liked to hunt deer and fished here and there. Now he can explore heaven!
His last wishes were cremation; no funeral will be held. Please donate to Corpus Christie on America Boulevard.
His favorite prayer, "Our Father" Matt. 6-5-15 and 6:10, Luke 11-4-4. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
The family invites you to a memorial mass at St. Mary's Church on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at 10 a.m. Feel free to come and share stories. An inurnment will be held on June 9th at 2 p.m at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery.
George is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughter, Bridgid Johnson of Jacksonville, FL; son, Zachary; two granddaughters, Jessica and Breanna of Boise; and two sisters, Judy Medek and Betty Bishop of Sparks, NV.
