James McMahon Obituary

NARRAGANSETT, RI- James McMahon, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on March 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 12, 1944, in Providence, Rhode Island, he lived a remarkable life marked by dedication to education, family, and community.

James began his academic journey at the University of Rhode Island, where he earned both a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's in Business Administration. His career path led him to serve as both a business manager for the Warwick School Department and, for twenty-five years, as the Department Chair of Computer Studies at the Community College of Rhode Island. His commitment to education and nurturing the minds of young people was evident throughout his career, shaping countless lives along the way.

A proud U.S. Navy Veteran, James served during the Vietnam War on the USS Little Rock. His service was a testament to his character and dedication to his country. After returning from his military service, he exemplified a lifelong passion for athletics; he was an amazing athlete who excelled in basketball and football. His talents were so impressive that he was invited to try out for the Green Bay Packers by the legendary Vince Lombardi, just as he was being drafted. Despite his athletic prowess, he remained humble, valuing camaraderie and the joy of participation over accolades.

An avid runner, James continued to run marathons well into his 60's, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to fitness and endurance. Beyond his athletic interests, he served as a motivational and inspirational coach for local youth, enriching the community with his encouragement and support.

James was also a huge soccer fan, often shared with his family and friends, celebrating the sport's spirit and camaraderie.

James cherished his family deeply. He is survived by his beloved wife, Alda (Petrarca) McMahon, with

whom he shared 58 wonderful years of marriage. He is also survived by his son Patrick J. McMahon of Wakefield, his son Andrew McMahon and his wife Holly of South Kingstown, and his daughter Kate Macinanti and her husband Brian of Kingston. James took immense pride in his role as a grandfather, leaving behind cherished memories with his granddaughter Jessica Macinanti and grandsons Joseph Macinanti, Ian McMahon, and Owen McMahon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Mac and Annie (Tyler) McMahon, and by his brothers Robert McMahon and William McMahon.

James McMahon's legacy will endure through his family, the lives he touched as an educator and coach, and the many cherished memories of his vibrant spirit. He will be missed dearly, but his impact on those who knew him will live on.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at 10am in St. Veronica Chapel, 1035 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett. His burial will be private.
