Minakshi Chatterjee Obituary

CHATTERJEE
DR. MINAKSHI, a community Psychiatrist and long-term resident of the Society Hill area of Phila, passed away on Oct. 28, 2008. Dr. Chatterjee was on the clinical staff of Northeast Community Mental Health Center of Phila; where she was held in high esteem by her patients as well as by her colleagues and the clinical staff.
Born in Calcutte India, on Dec. 3, 1952, Dr. Chatterjee arrived in the US in 1981. She was an outstanding 1975 graduate ('gold medalist') of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune India, and had obtained her psychiatric training at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi India.
Dr. Chatterjee was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (Adult and Geriatric) and was an active member of the American Psychiatric Assn. She was divorced and childless, but maintained a deep committment to her nieces and her younger colleagues. Born and raised in a Brahmin Hindu family, she converted to Christianty and was a regular member of St. Peter's Church in Phila. She also had an avid interest in American Constitution and participated in a study group on this topic.
An interesting combination of shy reserve and outgoing liveliness, Dr. Chatterjee was known in her family for her outstanding memory of events that evoked nostalgia. Her vivid imagination took her beyond party conversation however. She was a skilled painter and her art work attested to her lively spirit.
Dr. Chatterjee is survived by a brother, Dr. Dev Prasad Chakraborty, a Physicist from Pittsburgh, and a sister, Dr. Monisha Chakraborty Nayar, a Psychoanalyst in suburban Phila, and 3 nieces, Yamini Nayar, Kavita Nayar and Rimi Chakraborty.

I have been dealing with loss of my sister, Dr. Minakshi Chatterjee, after several months trying to cope with her loss. I miss her enormously. She was not only my sister, but my friend and we had gone through so much together. Though only a few years older than me, she took care of me and we shared many experiences. She loved me and my family dearly and we always stayed connected. No words can express the pain I feel, everyday. She was a good person, kind and gentle and always wanted to help others.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all her friends and colleagues who came to the memorial and have stayed connected with me and my family. They remind me of her and tell me things about her that I did not know. To all who have sent me and my family their love and concern, a special heartfelt thanks! It means a lot to me that she is remembered by so many who knew her, loved her and benefited from her.
I know she lived a good life and has finally found peace. Though her life was cut short, she helped many and struggled with much on her own. She will be missed, enormously.

Dr. Chatterjee was a brilliant physician. She knew how to listen, how to make a patient feel as the most important member of the recovery team -- and it brought miraculous results. She was a doctor from God. She prayed for her patients; very much a believer herself, she exuded confidence in real healing of mind, body and spirit. Gentle or stern, depending on what was in the best interests of a patient, she unfailingly commanded the utmost respect and admiration in everyone, as well as probably certain amount of jealousy in some colleagues... Kind, yet never condescending was her demeanor with the clients; she fought many a fearless and tiresome battle for their right to be heard and treated as equals. Compassionate, but uncompromising when it came to patients' medicaton regimen, she did research on behalf of those with rare side effects, calling pharmacological and insurance companies. She encouraged therapeutic expression through art, poetry, singing, volunteering and helping the less fortunate. She taught not to be affraid of mental illness, while being on the lookout for a change in simptoms -- and then work on them in conjunction with team of professionals. Very sensitive and astute to individual needs of those entrusted to her care, Dr. Chatterjee always maintained very clear professional boundaries when rejoycing in their successes or sharing in their sorrows.
And so, now we mourn her untimely passing... How can anybody who knew this remarkable woman not feel orphaned today? As a true caretaker, she wouldn't burden others with her own pain. Even in her blessed repose she is bringing healing to all who loved her, and to those who sometimes didn't understand enough to adore her.
May her memory be eternal. With the saints give rest, O Christ, to the soul of Thy servant Minakshi, where there is neither sickness, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.
Amen.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18

I can't begin to understand what you're going through... but I am remembering Dr. Chatterjee with you today, praying for you, and sharing in the sadness of losing someone so cherished in your life.

Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of one of His saints… Dr. Chatterjee told me once that she believed that to be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord. She is with him at peace now.

She may be gone from our sight... but never our memory, gone from our hearing... but never our hearts, gone from our touch... but her presence is felt, and the love that she gave us will never depart.

Dr. Chatterjee was dear to me and will be deeply missed and remembered always. With heartfelt condolences
