SALVATORE JOHN, 87, of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, died Monday, February 3, 2014 at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Avena was born in Phila., PA and raised in Palmyra, NJ before moving to Cinnaminson, NJ in 1960. In 1992, he moved to Mount Laurel. A practicing attorney for 63 years, he was the founder and partner of the firm Avena & Friedman PA in Camden, NJ. He was a graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA and Dickinson Law School in 1950, and was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1951. In 1954, he served as Deputy Attorney General for the State of NJ. Mr. Avena was known for his generosity in helping others and his humanitarian efforts. Always interested in sports and of the belief that sports were a healthy outlet for children, he contributed to the many youth athletic programs in his community. Additionally, he supported many civic organizations and charities.
Mr. Avena was preceded in death by his wife Francine in 2012 and son John in 2004. He is survived by his daughter Gracia Profaci (husband Joseph); son Salvatore; grand-children Salvatore, Joseph (wife Kachina), John and Anthony Profaci, and Salvatore and John Avena; and great granddaughter Madilyn Profaci.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, February 9th from 3:00 to 7:00 PM and on Monday, February 10th from 8:00 to 9:30 A.M. both at the MOUNT LAUREL HOME FOR FUNERALS, 212 Ark Road, Mount Laurel N.J. 08054. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. on Monday at Saint Charles Borromeo RC Church, 2500 Branch Pike, Cinnaminson, NJ 08077. Interment will be at Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mr. Avena may be made to The Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support at Saint Joseph's University, http://kinneyautism.sju.edu/support/index.html.
