Ethel S. MontagEthel Montag died peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning, April 18 2012.She was born September 1 1938 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of Emily and Gus Straus and raised in Louisville, KY and Atlanta, GA. Ethel and her husband Jim spent most of their married lives in Charlotte, NC. Ethel and Jim moved permanently to Hilton Head Island in 2008. In the 1960's, visiting her in-laws in their Calibogue Cay home, she fell in love with Hilton Head. She spent many summers with her children, nieces, parents, twin sister and grandchildren. She was able to convince Jim to buy a townhouse in Harbor Town in 1978. Ethel was co-owner with her husband of Casual Corner of North Carolina. She ran the IT Department and bought accessories for the 13 store chain. After moving to Hilton Head, Ethel became a part of the I-Pad SIG at HHI Computer Club. She served on the Board of Directors of the Mint Museum in Charlotte and on the Board of Directors of the local NCCJ, volunteered for United Way in Charlotte, and was a member of Temple Beth El, Temple Israel and Congregation Beth Yam. She was also active in Republican politics in Mecklenburg County. She devoted a lot of time to her dogs as they were a big part of her life. Ethel is survived by Jim, her husband for 52 years; a son, Lee Montag of Boston; a daughter, Emily (Jeff) Vaughan; granddaughters, Rachel and Shelby Vaughan all of Charlotte; her twin sister, Emory (Ralph) Logan of Hilton Head; brother in law and sister in law, Tony and Jackie Montag of Atlanta and many nieces, nephews and first cousins. Ethel was known as Bunny to her grandchildren and close family. A graveside service will be held Sunday, April 22 at 4:30 PM at Six Oaks Cemetery in Sea Pines Plantation, and a reception after the services at her home in Sea Pines.
