ALMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Mr. Ervin Stanley Waller, age 92, of Winter Park, Fla., formerly of Lynn, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the Hospice of The Comforter in Altamonte Springs, Fla.Ervin was born on June 17, 1921 in Chelsea to Fred Ray Waller and Mabel Carrie (Hutchinson) Waller. Growing up in Hyde Park, he spent his summers with his grandparents Charles and Pheobe Nickerson, and his aunts Susie (Hutchinson) Smith and Addie (Hutchinson) Sherlaw and uncle Dana Smith on their farms in East Lyndon,Vt. He enjoyed helping his grandfather and uncle with milking and herding dairy cattle, fishing the flowing brooks and exploring the nature around him. Vermont was his favorite place and he cherished his childhood memories there with his cousin Esther (Smith) Wadlin and his two sisters, Pauline (Waller) McGonagle and Lucille (Waller) Hackett. A graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Ervin worked as a tool and die maker at the Watertown Arsenal, in Watertown. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on a naval aircraft carrier and various submarines during World War II until 1946. As a young enlisted man, Ervin enjoyed dressing in uniform and attending dances with his friends. At a Boston YWCA dance, he met a pretty 24-year-old named Pauline (Polly) Moser, and they were later married on May 29, 1949.Two years later they welcomed their daughter, Alice. Ervin's love of New England's landscapes led him to take his wife, Pauline Marion (Moser) Waller and his daughter, Alice Elaine (Waller) Roderick, on many camping excursions throughout the White Mountains, the coasts of Maine, and to visit natural wonders and monumental sites throughout the country. He was very talented when it came to photography and drawing, and enjoyed sharing slides taken from his many trips and pencil-drawing nature scenes.As a health-minded man, Ervin stayed very active by exercising including walking and jogging each day and commuting by bicycle until the age of 82. An avid fisherman, he spent much time fishing off of Bass Point in Nahant as well as many lakes and streams throughout New England. He enjoyed gardening and his favorite plants included phlox, African violets and geraniums.Along with his wife, Pauline, he is survived by his daughter, Alice E. (Waller) Roderick and husband Paul S. Roderick of Winter Park, Fla. Grandchildren Terrence E. McCarthy of Winter Park, Fla., Tracy E. McCarthy of Nashua, N.H., Steven F. McCarthy and wife Laurel (Meyers) McCarthy of Longwood, Fla. and Jessica M. Roderick of Winter Park, Fla. Great-grandchildren Nicole, Michael, Anya, Kayla, Connor, Megan and Courtney. Cousins Shirley Davis and Bruce Wadlin of Florida. Also, several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by son-in-law John J. McCarthy, sisters Pauline (Waller) McGonagle and Lucille (Waller) Hackett, and cousin Esther (Smith) Wadlin.Service information: A memorial service was held on July 31 at Leu Gardens in Winter Park, Fla.
