Of Claremont passed away on December 10, 2011 at the age of 71. He was born to Virginia and Eddie Hodgert in Oakland, CA on April 21, 1940, and was the adopted son of Jack Troyer. After graduating from John Borroughs High School in Burbank, Gary attended the University of Redlands where he was a member of the varsity football and swimming teams. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1962 and a master's in 1964, taught history and coached at San Bernardino High School, and from 1967 to 1970 coached swimming and water polo at his alma mater, the University of Redlands. Retiring in 2004, Professor Troyer was subsequently inducted into the Pomona-Pitzer Athletic Hall of Fame in acknowledgement of his long and notable service to the College. In 2007 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the SCIAC athletic conference in which his teams competed for three decades. In recent years Gary has been an active community volunteer. He was a member of the Claremont Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Committee on Aging and had served on the board of directors for the Claremont Chapter of the American Red Cross. This year the Claremont Red Cross selected Gary as "Volunteer of the Year" recognizing his 50 years of outstanding commitment and service. He is survived by Linda, his wife of 30 years, daughter Catherine Rose (Hugh) and granddaughters Grace and Elizabeth Rose of Villa Park, and brother Jim Hodgert of Cupertino. Garys Friend

May 21, 2020

Gary was a very good man and friend, always ready to clean your clock at cribbage and other games, and great with the grill. We spent many a day together, and night, as next door neighbors at Campo Lopez South of the Border. A great amazing man, and his students loved him. I'm very sorry he didn't get to enjoy several more years of his retirement. He was loved and respected by all, and now he is missed very much too. My good friend Tom, who passed in 2016, was personally a pupil of Garys on one of his record setting teams. He idolized and loved Gary. Me too. Both Tom and Gary. I miss them both. Hopefully they're at the big swim meet and cook out up in the sky. I hope all of their family are very well in their absence. I know they must be missing them horribly, like me. May they rest in peace.

Linda,

My memories go back to our days as lifeguards at Pickwick Swim Park in Burbank. His obit is a real tribute to a good friend while growing up and a man who gave a lot to his community and to those lucky students who knew him.
