Thomas Coan Obituary

Thomas "Tom" William Coan (1931-2015)

In the early afternoon of Aug. 3, 2015, Tom passed away at Pomona Valley Hospital from complications from diabetes. Dad was 83 years old.

Tom was born in Decatur, Illinois on August 13, 1931. He was the son of Robert and Dorothy Coan. They moved to Oblong, Il., where he grew up on a small rural farm. His younger brother Ellis and sister Dolores Yager survive Tom.

He joined the Army after high school where he became a medic in the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star. A few months after leaving the Army, he met his wife of 60 years, Janice Maxwell.

Tom went to work at Swinerton & Walberg, there he became a superintendent for many years.

After leaving Swinerton & Walberg, Dad started his own Company; Coan Construction in Pomona.

Upon retiring, Dad started woodworking again. He also enjoyed traveling, fishing and playing gin rummy.

These past few years Dad's greatest joy besides Scottrading, were his great grandchildren. He really enjoyed spending time with them all.

Thomas Coan was preceded in death by his older brother Robert (Jr.) and his longtime buddies, Frank Dart, Warren Baker and Donnie Maxwell.

He is survived by his children Jeff Coan (Cheryl), Tami Rich (John), Lori Underwood (Shawn), Perry Coan (Sharon) and Tricia Coan-Dowdle (Michael). His grandchildren Jessica Rich Redondo, Lauren Rich, Justin Underwood, Jenna Underwood-Nunez, MacKenzi Coan and Marie Dowdle. Along with 4 great grandchildren.

An Honorarium will be held at The Coan Construction office, 1481 E. Grand Ave. Pomona, CA 91766, on Saturday, August 15, @ 5:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Donations in Tom's memory can be made to Oblong Academic Association . Dad always liked to invest in the kids from back home and give them the opportunity to succeed.
