Barbara Nevers Burnham

Barbara Nevers Burnham, a lifetime resident of South Windsor, died at home at the age of 89 on April 8, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell L. Burnham. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Sue Burnham and partner, Sia Dowlatshahi; and three loving sons, Keith Burnham and wife, Maryanne, Alan Burnham and wife, Irene, and Paul Burnham and wife, Elaine; also eight grandchildren, Matthew Burnham and wife, Joanna, Jeffrey Burnham and wife, Sarah, Brian, Kevin, Elizabeth, Zachery, Chase, and Calya Burnham; and three great-grandchildren, Dominic, Lilly, and Gabriel Burnham. She also leaves her cousin, Nancy Nevers Gozdeck and her husband, Ted.

Barbara is the daughter of the late Wilbur H. Nevers and is predeceased by a brother, Theron E. Nevers. In 1930 at the age of five she attended the one room Pleasant Valley schoolhouse on Ellington Road. She then went to Union School and graduated from Ellsworth High School Class of 1942. She then graduated from Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. She retired from the office of Finast Stores in East Hartford. After raising her family, Barbara worked as a loving caregiver for newborns at the South Windsor Child Development Center at Union School. She was a volunteer for FISH (Friends in Service Here) in South Windsor for 38 years. Barbara was an avid golfer and tournament champion at Century Hills Golf Course. She was still a champion in croquet at the age of 80. For years she enjoyed the family gatherings in Sunapee Harbor, New Hampshire. Barbara cherished the company of special close friends with whom she played cards several times a week at each others' homes as well as at the Senior Center.

Friends are welcome to attend the burial at Wapping Cemetery, 50 Oakland Road, in South Windsor on Saturday, April 11, at 10:30 a.m.
