Florence J. St. Clair

Florence J. (Sklenar) St. Clair, 91, of South Windsor, formerly of Surprise, Arizona, died peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, at Hartford Hospital after a valiant struggle with respiratory and heart issues along with COPD.

Florence was born on Sept. 15, 1923, in Omaha, Nebraska, daughter of the late Michael J. and Alice M. (Spicka) Sklenar, the third of seven children. Florence graduated from Benson High School in Omaha and went on to serve our country during World War II with the U.S. Coast Guard SPARS. Following the war, Florence lived in Hawaii for three years. She was married on June 26, 1971, in Reno, Nevada to Arthur O. St. Clair and together they settled in Novato, California. Florence worked in underwriting for both insurance brokers and company. Upon the death of her husband Arthur in 1986, she became something of a world traveler, taking 30 to 40 trips around the world, most of which were with her best friend Emily. Florence was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making candy and nut breads for the Fall Festival benefiting Sunny Hill's Children's Home. She loved to golf and served as Captain of the Women's Golf Association at her club in Novato. During her lifetime Florence lived in Omaha, Wilbur, Nebraska, Washington D.C., Honolulu, Hawaii, San Francisco, California, Novato, California, Surprise, and South Windsor.

She is survived by her brothers, Robert R. Sklenar and his wife, Mary Ann, of South Windsor, and Herbert A. Sklenar and his wife, Eleanor, of Birmingham, Alabama; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lillian Carol Sklenar and Doris Theresa Tewes; her brothers, Joseph M. Sklenar Sr. and Charles A. Sklenar; and her nephew, Joseph M. Sklenar Jr.

Her family will receive friends on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, from noon to 1 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor; followed by a memorial service in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Burial will follow with Military Honors at Wapping Cemetery.
