Herbert Butler Obituary

Herbert D. Butler, 90, of Enfield, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 31, 2022.

Born on Sept 17, 1931, in Springfield, Massahusetts, to the late George A. and Helen (Lucius) Butler, Herbert was the beloved husband of the late Ruth (Lincoln) Butler. He was a lifelong resident of Enfield, growing up in the North Thompsonville section of Enfield. A graduate from Enfield High School, Class of 1949, Herbert served his country as an army infantryman during the Korean War. In 1956 he married Ruth Lincoln from the Hazardville section of Enfield. Together they raised five children; Daniel, Thomas, James, Susan, and Richard. He worked early on as a tree service worker, eventually he took a job with the Connecticut Department of Corrections as a corrections officer of which he retired from in 1988 after 26 years of service. He had many interests over the years. Herbert was an avid outdoors man who grew up hunting and fishing along the banks of the Connecticut River. He loved all types of fishing including fly fishing; he also loved hunting especially for pheasant and rabbits. He also enjoyed collecting antique bottles. Herbert was very knowledgeable about gardening, plants, trees, flowers and vegetables. As he grew older, he turned his attention to wildlife and bird photography. He was proudest of the photographs he took of the Bald Eagles as they were re-establishing themselves along the banks of the Connecticut River Valley.

Herbert was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to his family of five children Daniel Butler of East Windsor, Thomas (Mary) Butler of Salem, Susan Lee of Enfield, James Butler of Bloomfield and Richard Butler (who passed in 2021), 10 beloved grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by five siblings: Helen Waterhouse, George Butler, Ernest Butler, Pearl Keith and Hazel Kelly.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with his family from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, at Browne Memorial Chapels, Enfield.

I am so happy that my daughter, Jen Meagher and I were able to visit Herbert a few years before he died. We shared memories of his father, my grandfather and we talked about the Fourth of July family clam bake, where all the Butler family would gather.
