Anita Madison-Grand Obituary

Age 75, died peacefully on October 22, 2005 at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center. She was born in Milwaukee on Jan. 21, 1930, daughter of the late John and Veronica (Walus) Grand. Anita graduated from Messmer High School (Milwaukee), Marquette University College of Nursing (BSN), Catholic University of America (MSN), and the Catholic Maternity Institute of Santa Fe, NM (Certificate in Nursing Midwifery). She pursed postgraduate work in public health at the University of Minnesota. Anita was a recognized leader and she pioneered efforts in developing a statewide network of family planning health services and perinatal care. She was one of the key health care professionals responsible for the early develop of Wisconsin regional high risk perinatal care centers and neonatal intensive care units. She was actively involved in the Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care; the American College of Nurse Midwives; the National Perinatal Association; the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses; and several other professional organizations. Anita was honored with career achievement awards, including the 1983 March Dimes Nurse of the Year Award; the 1984 WAPC Helen F. Callon and Thomas A Leonard Perinatal Award; the 1995 Wisconsin Public Health Association Basic Prevention Award; and the 1995 Maternal and Child Health Government Employee Achievement Award. Anita was employed by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services as a Maternal and Perinatal Health Nursing Consultant from 1967 to 1995. Previously, she held academic positions at Marquette University College of Nursing as well as clinical and supervisory positions in obstetrics at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee. During her retirement years, Anita enjoyed personal interests in gardening, caring for her former canine companions, and maintaining contact with a close circle of friends. Private Christian burial will occur at St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Washington. Memorials are requested to be directed to Perinatal Foundation, 1010 Mound Street, Madison, WI 53715; HospiceCare Foundation, Inc., 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711; or Dane County Humane Society, 5132 Voges Rd, Madison, WI 53718.
