Jurgen Herrmann Obituary

Herrmann, Dr. Jurgen Dr. Jurgen Peter Richard Herrmann, currently of Danville, CA, passed away peacefully October 19, 2016, at 8:30 PM at the age of 75 after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Herrmann, called Opa by his friends and family, was born on September 3, 1941, in Hamburg, Germany, to Dr. Richard Antonie Rudolf and Mathilde Ingeborg (Scheele) Herrmann. He grew up in Flensburg, Germany, and was the oldest of three children. Dr. Herrmann completed his medical school training in Germany and received his doctorate, summa cum laude, under the tutelage of the renowned geneticist, Professor Dr. Widikund Lentz. Dr. Herrmann was awarded a fellowship in clinical genetics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison under the well-known geneticist, Professor Dr. John Opitz. Dr. Herrmann completed a pediatric internship and residency to become a board-certified pediatrician, as well as becoming board-certified in clinical genetics and clinical cytogenetics. Dr. Herrmann was asked to join the faculty of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison as an assistant professor, then associate professor with tenure. He continued to work closely with Dr. Opitz for 11 years in patient care, teaching, and research. During this time, Dr. Herrmann became the author and coauthor of over 60 original research articles and book chapters on genetic disorders and birth defects. Dr. Herrmann married Andrea Pallister in 1969 (now divorced) and had three children. In 1978, Dr. Herrmann and his family moved to Milwaukee, WI, where he accepted an offer by the Medical College of Wisconsin to join the faculty and to create a Birth Defects Center at what is now Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. He became the Director of the Birth Defect Center and Professor of Pediatrics. Dr. Herrmann founded Great Lakes Genetics in 1982 to bring efficient academic-level genetic services directly to patients, when this was rarely available anywhere outside of a university setting. In 1985, he expanded his services to Appleton, WI. Dr. Herrmann lectured extensively in the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. He is credited with discovering multiple genetically-based syndromes, including several with his father-in-law, renowned Dr. Philip Pallister. Dr. Herrmann provided genetic services and counseling to thousands of patients until he retired in 2010. Dr. Herrmann is survived by: his son Peter Lar, daughter-in-law Heather (Bailey), granddaughters Maddison, Tessa, and Lisl of Boise, ID; his daughter Inga Wren Dolezar, son-in-law Jon Dolezar, grandsons Tristan and Koen of Holly Springs, GA; and his son Simon Jake, daughter-in-law Julee (Brophy), and granddaughter Alexia of Danville, CA. He is also survived by his sisters Mischi and Brigitte, both in Germany, as well as multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Richard and mother Mathilda. The body will be cremated. There are plans for a memorial service to take place in Milwaukee, WI, at a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the March of Dimes.

I just saw the sad news on Dr. Herrmann today as I was looking him up to refer him to my daughter who has had a couple challenging pregnancies in the last couple yrs. ending in unknown miscarriages. And Dr. Herrmann was my genetics Dr. when I was pregnant with this same daughter, keeping me feeling comfortable and confident in my difficult pregnancy with her after experiencing a very painful stillbirth 2 weeks before my delivery date 3 yrs before! Today this same daughter, whom I was blessed and grateful for Dr. Herrmann's expertise knowledge and genuine care, weighed 2 lbs. 12 oz. when she was born and is now 31 yrs old giving me 2 beautiful grandchildren, (and hopefully more!) God Bless his unconditional, caring heart!

While looking up the greatest geneticist I stumbled upon this obituary.. Rest in peace kind sir! While I was a pediatric orthopaedic fellow at the University of Wisconsin Dr Herrmann performed my amniocentesis because I am adopted and had no genetic history. He was so kind, knowledgeable, and skilled that after leaving WI we returned for my subsequent three pregnancies! I would not trust anyone else to perform that test and it was over that 8 yr span that I travelled from Virginia and KY to see him for each pregnancy. He was a truly kind soul and the type of doctor I hope someday to be remembered as. He had a great sense of humor as well telling my husband during the last pregnancy that now it was his turn and marked on the chart.. advanced paternal age !
I always felt a connection to him and even though it´s many years later I hope you ( his family) take much pride in his lifetime achievement and his humanity. God bless you and I am grateful to have known him !

Today as we were looking up information on Dr. Herrmann, we learned of his passing. Our first child, Zoey, was born in 1988 in Milwaukee. Dr. Herrmann was sent into our hospital room to explain to us about Down syndrome. With his words and compassion, our life that had changed instantly with a DS diagnosis became brighter and hopeful. His advice to two young parents was to take their child home and love him. He gently answered questions and said, 'I cannot tell you exactly what he will or will not accomplish. Just as I cannot tell you what any other child will be able to accomplish.'
The reason we were researching Dr. Herrmann, was that same baby is now a young man who is a self-advocate and public speaker in Milwaukee and Ozaukee counties! God rest his soul and comfort to his family. Dr. Herrmann has always been in our prayers and we thank him for the hope he gave our family that December in 1988.

I happened to see his obituary today when I was searching for a reference, and felt really sad. I worked in Racine, Kenosha and Milwaukee, WI for 18 years (1986- 2004) and he was very helpful to our practice and was very kind to my patients through out that time period. He was a great physician both in Academics and Private practice and was a great teacher. I always respected him. His teachings will continue to help generations of children thru' thousands of his colleagues and students. RIP Jurgen !!!!!!!

My heart was deeply saddened to hear the news of Dr Herrmann's passing. I knew Dr Herrmann for many years and then had the Honor of working with him as a sonographer for several years prior to his retirement. His compassion for his patients and families was outstanding. I learned so much from him and am a better sonographer and person today because of him. Rest in peace Dr and my prayers and thoughts to your loved ones.

It's difficult to find yourself in genetics while pregnant. He was kind, compassionate, and funny while performing a difficult job. My condolences to the family, may he rest in well deserved peace.

My husband and I saw Dr. Herrmann for the birth of two of our children. I will never forget the compassion of this truly wonderful man. He had a very special way of delivering the most devastating news with such heartfelt compassion. Equally, with the second pregnancy he had a wonderful way of reassuring us that everything would be alright. May this truly wonderful man rest in peace. You will be truly missed. Our deepest sympathy to all of your family.

Opa was truly the kindest and the most generous man I ever knew. He showed his love for me and his granddaughters and traveled great distances to be with us. I love him and will always miss that special twinkle in his eye he always reserved for me.

It is with terrible sadness to learn that this great and gentle man has passed. Dr. Herrmann saw us prior to the birth of both of our children. I still recall vividly when he told us on my birthday that Terri was going to have a boy. Though his professional demeanor never wavered, his sense of humor could catch you off guard. His expertise and calm reassurance helped prepare us to be parents. Rest in peace, Dr. Herrmann. Thank you for making our world a healthier place.
