Fr. Michael Newman

1938 - 2018

Newman, Fr. Michael, SDS Died in Chico, CA, on March 1, at the age of 79. He was a native of Milwaukee, born on December 17, 1938, to Ambrose and Edna (Barkley) Newman. Fr. Mike was educated at Mother of Good Counsel Parish, Salvatorian Seminary in St. Nazianz, Divine Savior Seminary in Lanham, MD, Catholic University in Washington DC. He was professed as a member of the Society of the Divine Savior (Salvatorians) on September 8, 1960, and ordained a priest in Washington on September 9, 1967. He taught at Trinity Prep Seminary in Sioux City, Iowa; served as Campus Minister at California State Universities in both Chico and Sacramento, CA; and was Vice President and later President of the National Association of Diocesan Directors of Campus Ministry. After his retirement in 2006, Fr. Mike celebrated Masses throughout northern California and became well-loved by many. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Thomas. His funeral Mass was celebrated on March 10 in Chico, CA, and he was buried there. A Memorial Mass will be held at the Chapel of St. Anne's Salvatorian Campus, 3800 N 92nd St, Milwaukee, on Friday, April 6, at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Fr.
