It´s many years after Prof. Bontly was laid to rest, but I thought I´d pen these few lines.
Never knew him personally but recently it came to my mind a short story I read in Boys´ Life magazine when I was 13. An hour of research on the Internet Archive discovered the issue of the magazine and the precise story, "The Coward," published in the December 1971 issue. And I find the author was Thomas Bontly.
I´m 66 years old now and the story´s author himself has been gone over ten years, yet I still recall the story and the impression it made on my young mind 53 years ago. I simply wished to give tribute to the author while it´s still possible for me to do so.
Thank you.

Tom Bontly was my first creative writing professor at UWM in 1973. I have a copy of his first book "The Competitor" on my desk.

Tom was always someone I could count on to make me smile, to clear out the redundant underbrush from any conversation, and to impress me with his extraordinary talent. He will be much missed. Marilyn, please know that I'm thinking of you during this very very difficult time.

I happened to review my copy of The Competitor just this morning. I studied under Tom Bontly in 1973. A dozen books later, I believe he truly inspired my career.

Marilyn and Tom,
Tom helped me get my first teaching job in the UWM English Department (from which I just retired), recruited me for the Council for Wisconsin Writers board (which I'm still on), was a thoughtful and supportive colleague, and, of course, mentored thousands of creative writing students over the years. I'll miss him. We'll all miss him.

Dear Marilyn and all, On behalf of Mary, who took courses with Tom, I want to say how sorry we are to hear the news. Mary told folks that the most important things she learned about the novel she learned from Tom, and he played a big part in so many of our good memories of the UWM English Department.

To Professor Bontly's family,
Tom was the best kind of teacher and mentor. Enthusiastic for another's work, with a true talent of his own, which he never flaunted.
Sicerely,
John Pidgeon, former student of Tom's in creative writing

Hi Marilyn, You may not remember me. I used to babysit your son. I loved Tom's book and I'm now giving it to my own son to read. Such a wonderful legacy Tom left.

Dear Marilyn,
Janet and I (both former students of Tom and in whose class we first met one another twenty-five years ago) are so saddened to learn about his death. There are many lessons I learned from Tom that I share with my students today: for example, remembering the trains he worked on in the basement with your son, Tom advised us not to try to re-create the entire world as we wrote, but rather to create a miniature version of a world, a small iworld, but one made with such careful attention to detail that it couldn't help but point to truths outside itself.
We're thinking of you and your family at this very difficult time.
With love,
Maurice K.G. & Janet Jennerjohn

To the Bontly Family - - The depth of the sorrow I feel at my dear friend's and mentor's and special guardian's passing is almost more than i can fathom. i will be always grateful for every kindness and support tom always had for me. i consider him always one of my most treasured champions. i recall the story he read to me when he came to visit after my serious car/pedestrian accident. besides bringing sub sandwiches for lunch and walking my cocker spaniel, claire, for me as i was wheelchair bound, he read a piece about what heaven will be like for writers. i pray, tom, it is everything you dreamed of. love, mj
