Violet Cope Obituary

Vi was born in Juneau August 18, 1930 in an apartment above Silverbow Bakery (which was then the San Francisco Bakery) and lived here the rest of her life except for a brief time in San Francisco in 1958 and 1959. Her greatest memories were of growing up on Starr Hill in a large family. She passed away on August 21, 2015 shortly after her 85th birthday.

Vi was proudest of her family, her Serbian heritage and her hometown of Juneau. She made several trips to Yugoslavia to visit family there. She had many friends and was known for her warmth, generosity and as a great hostess.

She worked for the Territorial Department of Education and also held a part-time position as a cashier in the 20th Century Theater. She also worked in various positions for the Legislature. She was co-owner of Reflections with her sister Nat and their friend Heather Cashen.

She married the love of her life, Bill Cope, in 1965. They spent many happy times at their cabins on Taku River and at Tee Harbor, and traveling to Missouri to visit Bill's family. Laguna Beach, California, was her favorite winter get-away.

Vi was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her parents Sam and Stana Dapcevich, brothers Bill, Paul, Bob, Don, sister Mae, sister in law Helen, and brother in law Costa.

She is survived by her brother John Dapcevich (Janice), her sister Natalie Alton and stepson Gary Cope, whom she considered "the best wedding present Bill gave her. "Auntie Vi" had numerous nieces and nephews who were as beloved by her as if they were her own children.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau.

A memorial service will be held at the Juneau Yacht Club at 2pm on September 14, 2015.

One of the sweetest ladies I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I have been out of town and only today heard of her passing. She came to my store often (The Plant People) and I went to her home often to help with her plants. She will truly be missed.

Vi bowled with my mom at Channel Bowl for many years, and later my mom worked for Bill at Foodland. They felt like family to us. I fondly remember celebrating Serbian Christmas with the family when Vi and Bill were visiting Natalie and Costa in Westminster, CA. Vi was the epitome of a "lady" and she was the consumate hostess. Vi will no doubt be missed by so many, and definately by her family. I'm smiling at the thought of my mom and Vi bowling a game together in heaven and talking about all the old times. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all as you remeber her grace and contributions to this world.

How could a person not admire such a lady as Vi Cope. Devoting her life to her parents for years without fail.
Then finding the love of a man who could devote his life to her is ever so beautiful a relationship.
Bless the family of sister Natalie and brother John during this trying time. Please know that I care.

Violet was a little ahead of me in school but that didn't matter. She acknowledged everyone with a smile and a pleasant hello. Vi loved fashion and was always well groomed. She had style. I know these last few years have not been easy for her or those who love her but she leaves a rich tribute of how to make the world a better place by living a generous and caring life.

When Jean Penrose and I married in 1966, our first apartment was at 12th and Glacier, in a small building owned by Bill and Vi. She was the world's nicest landlady, so kind as we set up our first household. Forever after we appreciated her, and want family and friends to know that we think of Vi as the absolute best! It's sad to know that brother and sister Don and Vi Dapcevich died this summer.

What sad news. Nat and John and family we share your sadness. Vi was a classy lady with a sense of humor and dignity. She was a delightful member of the Juneau community her entire life and a great many of us are going to miss her.
My how sad it is to see the old, genuine Alaskans fading from the scene. Nat, Donna and I are with you now. Kind thoughts.
