Richard Wyman Obituary

Richard E. Wyman 1929 ~ 2004  Richard (Dick) Edgington Wyman passed away quietly on June 20th with his sweetheart of 51 years, Margaret, at his side. He is also survived by his three children, Richard P. (Peggy), Bradley (Donna), and Laura (John) Zowtiak; his brother, Tom (Ellen); and six grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his son Eric. Dick was born January 2, 1929 to Thomas Noel and Dorothy Sage Wyman in Johnson City, TN. He was raised in California and graduated from Berkeley in 1950 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. He served honorably in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was employed by Shell Oil and after 23 years, left to direct the research program at Canadian Hunter. Dick had an entrepreneurial spirit and was involved in the start-up of several innovative companies, using new technologies that he felt would benefit society. Dick retired in 1993, which gave him the opportunity to consult and explore new ideas. He was active in the oil and gas professional societies and served as both a contributor and editor for several trade journals and books. He was recently honored by the local chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers when a scholarship was established in his name. Dick was a gentle and patient man. During adversity, he would never complain and always kept his sense of humor. He had a creative and innovative mind. His life was characterized by his integrity. He took a special joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren. His spirit touched all those who knew and worked with him. Though he will be sorely missed, he has touched our lives and inspired us to emulate his integrity, optimism and love for family and life. This legacy shall be passed on for generations. Dick and I had a long history working together and with others. For example, we were always focused on solving numerous technical issues which would ultimately result in various economic achievements for our companies, Shell Canada and later, Canadian Hunter Exploration. Working with Shell in the early 1970's in the Mackenzie Delta region for example, we jointly with a geophysicist out of New Orleans, were able to predict effectively, at what depth we would encounter a petroleum accumulation as well as its type and areal extent before initiating drilling the resultant discovery wells.
Working with others at Canadian Hunter during the late 1980's we pioneered the concept and initial horizontal drilling technology in Canada. We both believed deeply, based on results, in the value of microscopic examination of potential reservoir rock samples and of appropriate drillstem testing and fluid sample collection.

Dick was indeed a very special person. Having known Dick over 20 years, I have always been amazed at his innovative and creative approach toward problem solving. He provided solid guidance as I started my career with TerraTek, for which I will always be grateful. I extend my deepest sympathy to the Wyman family.

Dear Meg

Ruth and I were shocked to hear of Dick's passing. Dick, as you know, has made numerous contributions to research activities in the oil industry for which he will always be recognized. He and I worked on numerous projects together during the past 30 years both at Shell and Canhunter. There is no question that he was an exceptional person who interacted with people with great motivation and inspiration. Our thoughts and hearts are with you and your children during this time of stress.... Bob & Ruth

Dick was a very special person. He had so much knowledge to share. Not a day went by without him having us 'Hunters' "thinking outside the box".

Dick was an intelligent and creative geologist, and an inspiration to his colleagues. He played a large role in Canadian Hunter's revolutionary approach to the exploration business.
