EDWARD DUNN Obituary

Edward (Ed) Francis Dunn, 67, of Prairie Village, Kan., passed away peacefully in his sleep on Nov. 30, 2009. Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 3, at McGilley Chapel at 12301 State Line, with a Mic- O-Say memorial service at 5 p.m. followed by the rosary at 5:30 p.m. and family visitation until 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be the following morning at 10 a.m. at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Rd., Leawood, Kan. Ed was born Nov. 28, 1942, to John Patrick and Georgia Louise Dunn, who, along with his two brothers, preceded him in death. Ed was survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Ruthanne, of the home; their four sons and wives, Patrick and Emily Dunn of Lawrence, Kan., Richard Dunn and Kirsten Jacobsen of St. Louis, Mo., John and Shayna Dunn of Olathe, Kan., and Timothy and Susan Dunn of Van Buren, Mo.; and five grandchildren. Ed was a lifelong Kansas City resident who graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1959. An avid Wildcat, he earned his business degree from Kansas State University in 1963, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. Ed worked in sales before joining the Internal Revenue Service. An active parishioner at Cure of Ars Church and member of the Knights of Columbus, he was heavily involved in the parish Boy Scout Troop and the district with which it was affiliated. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ed's name to either the Heart of America Council of the Boy Scouts of America or the American Cancer Society.

Ruthanne and Sons,

Randy and I have appreciated your regular updates regarding Ed's state of health and the opportunity and blessing it gave us to be able to pray with you for strength and healing. Ruthanne, I have been amazed to see how those prayers were answered in the way you were able to walk through this challenging time with so much grace and strength. You have been a wonderful model and example for all of us. I hope and pray for the Lord's continued blessing, especially through the comfort of your beautiful sons, daughters-in-law, and your grandchildren.

Love, from your old KU college roommate,
Marcia

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to lose a father. Ed was a great man who taught me a lot about scouting and life. I have so many great memories of him as one of my Boy Scout leaders with John and Tim. My dad also thought very highly of him and I am sure they are reminscing together in heaven now and having a better time than ever!

Dear Dunn Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Eddie Dunn was an old friend of mine and I'm sorry that I will be unable to attend the visitation or the funeral due to my own health problems. You are in my prayers and God be with you all.

Ed was a special man who withstood far more than most people. I'm glad he passed easily, if far too soon, but the hole he leaves will never fill. May his family find comfort in memories once the grief has passed. Hold tight to one another and keep his flame burning in your hearts.

To the Dunn Family,
I was very saddened to hear of your loss. I know it's especially painful during the holidays, but I hope it eases your hearts to know that your Dad did not suffer; he was truly blessed with going to Heaven while he was sleeping. Many thoughts and prayers to all of you.

I sat behind Ed for 4 years at Rockhurst and always considered him a terrific guy. We corresponded for some time during college but I have not been in KC since high school so we lost contact. I understand from a mutual friend, Tom Gordon, that Ed has suffered for some time with a ravaging cancer. I appreciated Kathy Doyle's note and would imagine Ed would have handled this situation with grace and courage. My prayers are with his wife and sons. R.I.P.

I had the privilege of working with Ed at IRS for the past several years. He was both a gentle man and gentleman. His fight to beat his cancer was an inspiration to all of us. I am sorry for your loss, but know that heaven is rejoicing because Ed is now in the Kingdom with God our Father, where he so deservedly belongs. Know that Ed is in my thoughts and prayers.
