Ruth Glass Obituary

Ruth Romaine Glass
February 17, 1927 - September 30, 2022
Kansas City, Missouri - Ruth Romaine Glass, age 95, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on Friday, September 30, 2022.
Ruth Romaine Mutchler Glass was born Feb. 17, 1927, in her grandmother's kitchen on their dairy farm near Clay City, Indiana. She was the only child of Ruth Yegerlehner Mutchler and Earl Mutchler.
The family moved to Wilmington, Illinois, a small town 60 miles south of Chicago, where Earl worked in the administrative office of a mining company. Romaine had a relatively secure childhood there, and told countless stories of small-town life in the Depression years, and the years following, during and through World War II.
After high school, Romaine's mother adamantly supported sending Romaine to college. She attended DePauw University in Indiana, later transferring to University of Illinois, where she received an English degree. Romaine taught high school English and Journalism, overseeing the yearbook publishing at Kankakee High School, Kankakee, Illinois.
In 1950, Romaine married the love of her life, Albert "Tye" Glass, also from Wilmington, Illinois, who had served in the U. S. Navy in the Philippines during the war. Albert Glass returned from the service and enrolled at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, receiving a degree in economics.
The couple settled in Des Moines, where Albert's career grew as an executive of Look magazine. They had three children, Clark Glass, Janis Ruth Glass Mahoney and Thomas Albert Glass. Romaine was a clever, loving, thoughtful mother who enjoyed life and her family to the fullest. In the 1960's, Al and Romaine bought a farm south of Des Moines, and family and friends enjoyed many outdoor pursuits at the farm.
The mid-1970's brought Romaine and the Glass family to Kansas City, where Albert continued work in the magazine publishing field. Romaine enjoyed work as well, as an editor of publishing at Johnson County Community College. Upon the death of her beloved husband in 1990, Romaine developed an avid interest in travel, taking many trips to European countries, such as Denmark and Norway and also travelled as far as China, and Phuket, Thailand.
Romaine loved greatly and was loved by many, including her children and grandchildren. Grandchildren are Kathryn Mutchler Glass (Dan Rosenheck, London, England), Scott Andrew Glass (Kansas City, MO), Daniel Tye Mahoney (Jessica Mahoney, Missoula, MT), Matthew Christian Mahoney (Kristen Mahoney, Chicago, IL), and Jane Catherine Mahoney (Jorge Carsí Aguado, Madrid, Spain). Romaine has four great-grandchildren. Mira Grace Fowler and Briar Lee Mahoney of Montana, Patrick Thomas Mahoney of Chicago and Andrew Tye Rosenheck of London.
Romaine practiced generosity, good cheer, hospitality, and love throughout her life. She was an excellent storyteller with a keen eye for details, and history. She was loved by many and will be sorely missed.

Romaine truly was a very nice person. She always reached out to people even if just to be sure that someone has in a friendly and welcoming way! She was my first friendly contact on campus I believe in Word Production in the CSB Building at JCCC! She told me that she liked my name and it reminded her of Bernadette Peters! My prayers go out to her and her family! I was blessed to have know her!
