Elizabeth Atinay Obituary

ATINAY Elizabeth Archer May died peacefully Sunday, January 14, 2018, surrounded by family and friends, all of whom had often sat at her kitchen table enjoying food, life, and each other. She was 77. She saw in every gathering the possibility of a celebration. A holder of strong positions regarding the world, people, history, and events, whether in the right or in error she was never in doubt. She loved Brussels sprouts. She graduated with the first class of architects at the University of Kentucky in 1964. She was the only woman in the class at a time when people assumed that such a profession belonged only to men. When she was first with child her father enjoyed the bewildered looks he received from people when he proudly told them he had a pregnant architect in his family. Elizabeth was the first woman to be president of the Kentucky Society of Architects, now AIA Kentucky. She remained an advocate for the College of Architecture and its students as a practicing architect and in her retirement. She was a primary leader in Kentucky's efforts to eliminate architectural barriers for people with disabilities and directed the development of the state's accessibility code. As might be expected, Elizabeth had a superb sense of taste. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert V. May and Emma Wells May of Prestonsburg; her sister Julia Mayo May; and her husband Thomas Atinay. She is survived by her daughter Emma Atinay Bosc and her three daughters; her son Charles Waldberg Atinay, his wife Denise, and their three daughters; her brother Robert May, his wife Virginia, and their children and grandchildren; and her brother Walter May, his wife Ann Render, and their sons. She will be missed. On Thursday, January 18, at Christ Church Cathedral, Lexington, a visitation will begin at 10 a.m., and a celebration of life will be held at 11:30. There will be a reception at the cathedral following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Preston White Travel Scholarship Fund, Attention: Lori Matthews, College of Design, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky. 40506 or to Christ Church Cathedral-Helm, 166 Market Street, Lexington, Ky. 40507.
